Nutrients and not temperature are the key drivers for cyanobacterial biomass in the Americas

Sylvia Bonilla et al.

Summary: Cyanobacterial blooms pose a threat to freshwater use globally and present challenges for water management. While high temperatures and nutrient concentrations are believed to trigger blooms, the roles of nitrogen and phosphorus are still debated. This study analyzed data from lakes across a vast geographic range and found that phosphorus was the primary resource explaining cyanobacterial biomass, while temperature had a weak relationship. Shallow lakes were found to be more vulnerable to eutrophication.

Toxic compounds produced by cyanobacteria belonging to several species of the order Nostocales: A review

Bahareh Nowruzi et al.

Summary: Cyanobacteria, particularly the order Nostocales, are known producers of various toxin compounds with potential applications in pharmaceuticals. These compounds, such as microcystins and anatoxins, have destructive effects on both terrestrial and aquatic environments but also show promise as leads for drug discovery in the future.

Biovolume and surface area calculations for microalgae, using realistic 3D models

Gabor Borics et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel approach using real-like 3D mesh objects to visualize microalgae and calculate their volume and surface area. By calculating specific shape and surface area constants, accurate volume and surface area can be quickly computed for each taxon, providing new possibilities for data analyses in the field of phytoplankton ecology.

Current and future threats for ecological quality management of South American freshwater ecosystems

Ana Torremorell et al.

Summary: Global change drivers are affecting freshwater ecosystems in South America, with rising human pressures on natural resources and lack of environmental protection measures. The main threats include climate change, watershed stressors, hydrological alteration, channel modification, and biological stressors, especially related to land uses such as mining, agriculture, and urban expansion. Empowering public organizations for environmental protection, developing regulatory frameworks, providing funding for environmental legislation, and implementing ecological rehabilitation are needed to reduce threats and promote sustainable development in the region.
