Chronic and intense droughts differentially influence grassland carbon-nutrient dynamics along a natural aridity gradient

Wentao Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of chronic and intense drought on carbon-nutrient dynamics of grassland vegetation and soil, and found that drought largely decreased carbon and nutrient pools, with different responses depending on the type of drought. The sensitivity of biogeochemical responses to drought treatments decreased with increased aridity in dry areas.

Impacts of cutting frequency and position to tree line on herbage accumulation in silvopastoral grassland reveal potential for grassland conservation based on land use and cover information

Andrea Schmiedgen et al.

Summary: Frequent defoliation can increase herbage utilisation efficiency in agricultural grasslands, but extensive management near trees may reduce yield. Research in Germany suggests that within a 4.5m radius of trees, there is little impact on high-efficiency utilisation, indicating potential for grassland extensification.

Hydraulic redistribution by hybrid poplars (Populus nigra x Populus maximowiczii) in a greenhouse soil column experiment

Rowena Gerjets et al.

Summary: The experiments demonstrated that deep-rooted poplar plants are capable of redistributing water to benefit water stressed neighboring plants in agroforestry systems. This finding provides evidence for an enhanced soil water supply to shallow-rooted crops during drought conditions in agroforest systems.

Evaluation of the precision of the rising plate meter for measuring compressed sward height on heterogeneous grassland swards

D. J. Murphy et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial variation of herbage mass within pastures and found that pasture heterogeneity is influenced by factors such as grazing, fertilisation, sward composition, and seasonality. Results showed that recording 24 measurements per hectare using the Rising Plate Meter could estimate mean Compressed Sward Height to within 5% relative prediction error, with a standard deviation of repeatable measurements calculated to be 4.34 mm.
