Estimation of Spatial Distribution and Fluid Fraction of a Potential Supercritical Geothermal Reservoir by Magnetotelluric Data: A Case Study From Yuzawa Geothermal Field, NE Japan

Keiichi Ishizu et al.

Summary: Supercritical geothermal reservoirs are a new type of geothermal resource that can provide more energy than conventional geothermal reservoirs. However, little is known about their spatial distribution and fluid composition. A study conducted in the Yuzawa geothermal field in northeastern Japan revealed the presence of a potential supercritical geothermal reservoir with an average temperature exceeding 400 degrees Celsius, a fluid fraction of 0.1%-4.2%, and salinity values between 5-10 wt%.

Geochemistry of geothermal fluid with implications on circulation and evolution in Fengshun-Tangkeng geothermal field, South China

Ji Luo et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the sources, evolution, and reactions of geothermal fluid during its ascending process in the Dengwu power plant of Fengshun area. The study shows that the geothermal water is slightly alkaline and originally recharged by precipitation from mountainous areas. The fluid circulates in a granite reservoir and undergoes dissolution of silicate minerals and water-rock interactions. Helium and neon isotope analysis indicates the migration of volatile from the mantle into the geothermal fluid. The water mixes with shallow groundwater and river water during the ascending process before being discharged. The research provides insights into the characteristics and origins of geothermal fluid in the area.

Paleoproterozoic S-type granites in the Lengshui complex, South China: Implications for the tectonic evolution of the Yangtze Block

Kuizhou Li et al.

Summary: The Paleoproterozoic granitoids in the Yangtze Block show two different crystallization ages, indicating different tectonic settings related to subduction and collision during the assembly of the Columbia supercontinent. The similar zircon Hf isotope ratios and ages suggest that the monzogranites may have been generated by partial melting of Archaean crustal materials. This study supports the placement of the Yangtze Block near Laurentia in the Columbia supercontinent based on similarities with other blocks.

Geothermal potential of the eastern end of the Gediz basin, western Anatolia, Turkey revealed by three-dimensional inversion of magnetotelluric data

Ozlem Hacioglu et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional models of the crustal electrical resistivity were derived from the inversion of magnetotelluric data in the eastern end of the Gediz basin, revealing the distribution of resistivity layers and their relation to the development of geothermal reservoirs in the upper crust. The models show surficial low-medium resistivity layer associated with sedimentary succession and a deep high resistivity layer related to the Massif, as well as anomalous conductive zones and possible fluid pathways in the basin.

The mechanism of high-salinity thermal groundwater in Xinzhou geothermal field, South China: Insight from water chemistry and stable isotopes

Xumei Mao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the hydrothermal circulation in Xinzhou geothermal field near the coast of South China using water chemistry and stable isotopes. It found that thermal and non-thermal groundwaters have different salinity and chemical types, with thermal waters possibly derived from water-rock interactions at high temperature. Thermal groundwater flow in deep faults is driven by thermodynamic buoyancy in the conceptual circulation model.

An electrical conductivity model of a coastal geothermal field in southeastern China based on 3D magnetotelluric imaging

Qi Han et al.

Summary: The study of the Xinzhou geothermal field in South China and its surrounding area has revealed the distribution of electrical conductivity and geothermal reservoir through magnetotelluric (MT) data analysis. The presence of wide granite formations and faults provide pathways for the movement of hydrothermal fluids. The geothermal reservoir is characterized by a high electrical conductivity anomaly beneath the hot spring, with a deep recharge channel found in the southeast part of the study area.

Geochemical Characteristics of Hydrothermal Volatiles From Southeast China and Their Implications on the Tectonic Structure Controlling Heat Convection

Jiao Tian et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the primary hydrothermal volatile component in southeast China is atmospheric N2, indicating medium-low temperature geothermal systems. The area shows low CO2 and CH4 contents while having a significant contribution of mantle heat flow, with enhanced hydrothermal fluid convection in the adjacent area of the two provinces suggesting potential for geothermal resource development.

Existence of High Temperature Geothermal Resources in the Igneous Rock Regions of South China

Yiman Li et al.

Summary: High temperature geothermal resources may be found in the Southern Leizhou Peninsular and Northern Hainan Island, where possible partial melts of the magma chamber serve as high temperature heat sources. Other low resistivity zones in the upper crust are more likely caused by fluid in the formations or faults.

Three-dimensional resistivity structure in the hydrothermal system beneath Ganzi Basin, eastern margin of Tibetan Plateau

Yuanzhi Cheng et al.

Summary: The Ganzi geothermal system on the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau shows active surface manifestations, with shallow geothermal reservoirs mainly consisting of sedimentary layers and deep reservoirs of fault fracture zones. The porosity of the geothermal reservoirs ranges from 5 to 10%, as estimated from the resistivity model.
