The Magnetic and Color Reflectance Properties of Hematite: From Earth to Mars

Zhaoxia Jiang et al.

Summary: Hematite is a common canted antiferromagnetic mineral with a reddish color. Its identification and quantification can be conveniently achieved through magnetic and color properties. Understanding hematite's characteristics and content is crucial for studies of the iron cycle, paleoenvironmental evolution, and research on Mars. However, previous research mainly focuses on stoichiometric hematite, neglecting the effects of cation substitution. Remagnetization is another complex problem associated with hematite. Recognizing the properties of cation-substituted hematite and understanding remagnetization mechanisms are important for identifying and interpreting the magnetic signals carried by hematite.

Decoupled paleosol-based proxies in Chinese loess deposits: Role of leaching and illuviation processes

Xianqiang Meng et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the influences of leaching-illuviation processes on paleosol-based proxy systems in multiple loess-paleosol sections on the Chinese Loess Plateau. The correlations between pedogenic and chemical weathering proxies vary significantly under different rainfall conditions. Leaching-illuviation processes can explain these discrepancies, and the correlation coefficient between magnetic susceptibility and chemical weathering proxies can be used to assess the pristineness of paleosol-based proxies and the intensity of leaching-illuviation processes.

Significant influence of Northern Hemisphere high latitude climate on appeared precession rhythm of East Asian summer monsoon after Mid-Brunhes Transition interglacials recorded in the Chinese loess

Xianqiang Meng et al.

Summary: A high-resolution East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) precipitation record from North China over the past 720 kyr shows periodicity supporting the hypothesis of high-latitude climate forcing, with Arctic perennial sea ice playing a significant role in decreasing EASM precipitation during post-Mid-Brunhes Transition interglacials. Additionally, EASM intensity during warm Marine Isotope Stages is related to moisture transport from the warming tropical ocean.

Hematite reconstruction of Late Triassic hydroclimate over the Colorado Plateau

Christopher J. Lepre et al.

Summary: The study validates pigmentary hematite as a proxy indicator for the Late Triassic environment through analyzing a red bed sequence in Arizona. The results show the evolving pattern of the Late Triassic monsoon, a long-term rise in aridity starting around 215 Ma, and increased oscillatory climate change at around 213 Ma. These changes are attributed to the drift of the Colorado Plateau northward as part of Laurentia and fluctuating CO2 levels.

Marine sedimentary records of chemical weathering evolution in the western Himalaya since 17 Ma

Peng Zhou et al.

Summary: The sediment of the Indus Fan is more weathered than that of the Bengal Fan due to slow transport and dry climate. Chemical weathering proxies show moderate increase from 13 to 11 Ma, decrease until 6 Ma, and then weak weathering since then. The reduction in alteration state after 3.5 Ma correlates with the onset of Northern Hemispheric glaciation, suggesting regional climate change impacts weathering intensity.
