A process-oriented evaluation of CAMS reanalysis ozone during tropopause fowls over Europe for the period 2003-2018

Dimitris Akritidis et al.

Summary: In this study, the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) reanalysis data was evaluated for its ability to reproduce ozone increases during tropopause folding events. It was found that although CAMSRA could replicate the observed ozone enhancements in the troposphere, it generally overestimated the observed ozone concentrations, especially in the upper part of the observed increases. This overestimation was attributed to the implementation of data assimilation. Therefore, there is a need for assimilated ozone products with better vertical resolution to accurately represent ozone variability during tropopause folds.

An assessment of tropopause characteristics of the ERA5 and ERA-Interim meteorological reanalyses

Lars Hoffmann et al.

Summary: The tropopause layer plays a key role in atmospheric chemistry and physics. This study compares the representation and characteristics of the lapse rate tropopause based on ECMWF reanalysis data. The comparison reveals significant differences between ERA5 and ERA-Interim tropopause data, particularly on small spatiotemporal scales. ERA5 shows larger variability and improved spatiotemporal resolution, providing more accurate information for future tropopause-related studies.

A Global Climatology of Tropopause Folds in CAMS and MERRA-2 Reanalyses

Dimitris Akritidis et al.

Summary: Tropopause folds play a critical role in stratosphere-to-troposphere transport and impact tropospheric composition and weather systems. The study presents the global climatology of tropopause folds from 2003 to 2018, showing that most folds are vertically shallow and located near subtropical jet streams, with deeper folds over storm tracks. Both CAMS and MERRA-2 reanalyses exhibit good spatiotemporal agreement in fold characteristics, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere.

Comprehensive evaluation of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) reanalysis against independent observations: Reactive gases

Annette Wagner et al.

Summary: The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) offers forecast and reanalysis products for air quality and atmospheric composition. An evaluation of the CAMS global reanalysis data set for reactive gases like ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and formaldehyde shows stable and accurate representation globally, with challenges in specific regions. Assimilation of satellite data and emissions are crucial for model accuracy, demonstrating the impact through comparison with a model run without assimilated data.
