Simulated sea levels during 1948-2009 in a global ocean-sea ice model for OMIP

Yaqi Wang et al.

Summary: This paper assesses the ability of the LICOM3 model to simulate sea levels, finding good agreement in most regions but large deviations in the western boundary current and tropical eastern Pacific. The excessive negative trend in the tropical eastern Pacific is related to the forcing data. The results show that sea level variability is mainly driven by changes in thermosteric sea level, but there are differences in the Southern Ocean and North Atlantic.

Concentrated and Intensifying Humid Heat Extremes in the IPCC AR6 Regions

Simone Speizer et al.

Summary: Extreme humid heat events have increased globally, but regional changes and temporal characteristics have not been well explored. Using ERA5 reanalysis data from 1979 to 2019, this study finds varying trends in extreme wet-bulb temperatures at the regional scale. Interannual variations in extremes are strongly related to El Nino-Southern Oscillation in many locations. The proximity of precipitation events to humid heat days suggests local moisture effects may lead to clustering. Understanding these spatial and temporal patterns is crucial for understanding heat stress and developing region-specific strategies.

Defining the Internal Component of Atlantic Multidecadal Variability in a Changing Climate

Clara Deser et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the skill of two methods in capturing the spatial pattern of internal AMV, with the first method mistakenly attributing the structure of forced climate change onto internal AMV, while the second method shows robustness to climate change. The models simulate realistic patterns of internal AMV, but the assessment is hindered by the brevity of the observational record.

Interannual SAM Modulation of Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Does Not Account for Its Long-Term Trends, Pointing to a Limited Role for Ozone Depletion

L. M. Polvani et al.

Summary: The expansion of Antarctic sea ice remains a puzzling feature of current climate change. Studies have shown a causal link between the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and sea ice anomalies, but SAM only explains a small fraction of year-to-year variability. Research on multidecadal trends concludes that SAM and the ozone hole are not the primary drivers of recent sea ice expansion around Antarctica.

CMIP6 Historical Simulations (1850-2014) With GISS-E2.1

Ron L. Miller et al.

Summary: The study investigates the climate simulations using different configurations of the NASA GISS Earth System ModelE2.1 during the historical period from 1850 to 2014. The findings suggest that GISS-E2.1 ensembles are more sensitive to greenhouse gas forcing than their CMIP5 predecessors, but show less warming in recent decades due to greater longwave opacity in the pre-industrial simulations. The research highlights the importance of base climatology in understanding climate forcing and trends.

Multidecadal climate oscillations during the past millennium driven by volcanic forcing

Michael E. Mann et al.

Summary: Research suggests that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation may actually be influenced by competing effects of anthropogenic greenhouse gases and sulfate aerosols, rather than being an internal climate oscillation. By comparing climate model simulations and paleoclimate data, it is concluded that the apparent multidecadal oscillations are likely artifacts of volcanic activity during the preindustrial era, projecting onto the 50- to 70-year frequency band. Thus, there is currently no compelling evidence for internal multidecadal oscillations in the climate system.

Combined Effects of Global Warming and Ozone Depletion/Recovery on Southern Hemisphere Atmospheric Circulation and Regional Precipitation

Julia Mindlin et al.

Summary: The interaction between global warming and ozone depletion/recovery has complex effects on Southern Hemisphere circulation and precipitation changes. At the regional scale, the combined effects of other remote drivers of circulation change are more important than the influence of ozone and global warming.

Hemispheric asymmetry in ocean change and the productivity of ecosystem sentinels

W. J. Sydeman et al.

Summary: Climate change and human activities have profound effects on marine ecosystem productivity, particularly impacting seabird breeding success, with stronger effects on fish-eating species in the northern hemisphere; hence, ocean management at hemispheric scales and targeted recovery plans are necessary. In the southern hemisphere, lower changes in seabird productivity provide opportunities for strategic management approaches like establishing large marine protected areas to sustain food webs and predator productivity.

Tropical teleconnection impacts on Antarctic climate changes

Xichen Li et al.

Summary: A substantial climatic changes have been observed in the Antarctic over the modern satellite era, many of which are believed to be influenced by tropical-polar teleconnections through Rossby wave dynamics. These connections play a significant role in shaping Antarctic climate variability and changes in recent years.
