Energy balance and momentum budgets due to the internal tides generated by a group of submarine canyons

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: Submarine canyons on the continental shelf in the northern South China Sea have significant impacts on the generation and propagation of internal tides. The rough seafloor of these canyons affects the dissipation of internal tides and induces intensified mean flow and clockwise circulation inside each canyon.

Variation of Internal Solitary Wave Propagation Induced by the Typical Oceanic Circulation Patterns in the Northern South China Sea Deep Basin

Jieshuo Xie et al.

Summary: Large-scale circulations play a crucial role in influencing the variation of internal solitary waves in the northern South China Sea deep basin. The upstream South China Sea western boundary current and different circulation patterns associated with Kuroshio intruding paths have significant impacts on wave speed and amplitude, primarily through wave scattering, focusing, and Doppler effects.

On Tidal Modulation of the Evolution of Internal Solitary-Like Waves Passing through a Critical Point

Xiaolin Bai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of tidal currents on the cross-shelf movement of a critical point separating deep and shallow water where Internal Solitary Waves evolve. The findings reveal phase-locked tidal variations of the critical point driven by stratification fluctuations modulated by barotropic and baroclinic tidal currents. The movement of the critical point is induced by isopycnal displacements and sheared currents, reaching up to 10 km within a tidal cycle in the South China Sea.

Small-Scale Topographic Effects on the Generation of Along-Shelf Propagating Internal Solitary Waves on the Amazon Shelf

Xiaolin Bai et al.

Summary: This study investigates along-shelf propagating internal solitary waves (ISWs) on the Amazon Shelf using satellite observations and numerical modeling. The study found that the streak-like patterns of the ISWs are a result of the quasi-two-dimensional bathymetry below, and the joint effects of the NBC and tidal currents near-critical conditions can result in ISW generation. The study demonstrates the importance of small-scale topographic features in generating large numbers of ISWs, contributing to ocean mixing and potentially sediment resuspension.
