Elevated Formation of Particulate Nitrate From N2O5 Hydrolysis in the Yangtze River Delta Region From 2011 to 2019

Min Zhou et al.

Summary: Aerosol nitrate has become the most abundant compound in aerosol pollution in eastern China. The response of nitrate to nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction is still unclear despite the government's stringent policies. The study found that elevated dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5) hydrolysis is responsible for the observed increase in nitrate.

Rapid narrowing of the urban-suburban gap in air pollutant concentrations in Beijing from 2014 to 2019

Xue Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the spatial patterns of atmospheric pollutants in urban and suburban areas is crucial for assessing their impact on regional air quality, climate, and human health. Analysis of pollutant monitoring data from the China National Environmental Monitoring Center revealed that the differences in pollutant concentrations between urban and suburban areas in Beijing rapidly decreased from 2014 to 2019, reflecting the quick response to emission reduction measures implemented in 2013. However, due to efficient O-3 formation in urban areas in recent years, the decrease in O-3 concentration difference between urban and suburban areas was more pronounced in summer than in winter, with urban areas experiencing higher daytime O-3 concentrations than suburban areas. Furthermore, meteorological changes had a greater impact on pollutant concentration differences in 2014 compared to 2019, suggesting a reduced role of regional air mass transport in the spatial variability of pollutants under future emission reduction scenarios in China.

The diurnal cycle of summer tropospheric ozone concentrations across Chinese cities: Spatial patterns and main drivers

Nan Xia et al.

Summary: China is facing severe tropospheric ozone pollution, with higher daytime maximum ozone concentration in northern cities and North China Plain during summer. Our findings suggest the need for joint regulation of PM2.5 and NO2 emissions to control ozone pollution in Chinese cities.

Formation of droplet-mode secondary inorganic aerosol dominated the increased PM2.5 during both local and transport haze episodes in Zhengzhou, China

Shenbo Wang et al.

Summary: The size distribution and formation of secondary inorganic aerosol are key factors affecting the increase of PM2.5 concentration. Local processes were mainly influenced by local pollutant sources, while transport processes were affected by air mass transport. Different processes exhibited different particle size ranges and contributions to PM2.5 concentration growth.
