Day-to-Day Variability of the Semidiurnal Tide in the F-Region Ionosphere During the January 2021 SSW From COSMIC-2 and ICON

J. Oberheide

Summary: The semidiurnal tidal spectrum in the F-region ionosphere is significantly enhanced during the January 2021 Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) according to the hourly COSMIC-2 Global Ionospheric Specification (GIS) data assimilation. The response of the semidiurnal migrating tidal in topside electron densities closely follows the day-to-day changes of the 10 hPa, 60 degrees N zonal wind from MERRA-2 during the SSW. This study provides new insights into space weather variability driven by lower and middle atmosphere dynamics through the analysis of COSMIC-2 GIS data, which is the first data set to resolve the tidal weather of the ionosphere on a day-to-day basis.

Sudden Stratospheric Warmings

Mark P. Baldwin et al.

Summary: Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) are impressive fluid dynamical events characterized by large and rapid temperature increases in the winter polar stratosphere, which are usually caused by the breaking of planetary-scale waves propagating upwards from the troposphere. SSWs result in the breakdown of the polar vortex, along with rapid descent and warming of air in polar latitudes, affecting tropospheric weather and potentially leading to cold air outbreaks over North America and Eurasia.

Modeling of Planetary Wave Influences on the Pre-reversal Enhancement of the Equatorial F Region Vertical Plasma Drift

Y. Yamazaki et al.

Summary: Temporal and longitudinal variations of the pre-reversal enhancement (PRE) in the equatorial F region vertical plasma drift are studied. It is found that the 6-day wave plays a significant role in influencing the PRE intensity, and different types of waves contribute to PRE in distinct ways.

Ionospheric Signatures of Secondary Waves From Quasi-6-Day Wave and Tide Interactions

Y. Yamazaki et al.

Summary: The study examined the ionospheric response to a sudden stratospheric warming and an exceptionally strong quasi-6-day wave that occurred in the southern hemisphere in September 2019. Analysis of total electron content data revealed ionospheric variations associated with the non-linear interaction between the Q6DW and atmospheric tides, including standing oscillations and westward-propagating oscillations. This study identified the secondary wave signatures of the Q6DW-tidal interaction in ionospheric observations for the first time, with oscillations symmetric about the magnetic equator.
