Uranium-thorium isotope systematics of cold-seep carbonate and their constraints on geological methane leakage activities

Maoyu Wang et al.

Summary: Marine methane hydrates, a significant carbon reservoir, are influenced by seafloor pressure and temperature changes. Reconstructing the growth history of cold-seep carbonates helps determine methane hydrate stability in the past. This study developed in-situ analytical methods to investigate U-series geochemistry and geochronology of cold-seep carbonates, finding that U-238 and Th-232 in the carbonates primarily originate from seawater and detrital particles, respectively. Applying the method to samples from the northern South China Sea revealed continuous cold seep activity since approximately 72 ka, with varying timing and duration of methane leakage.

Structural controls on widespread methane seeps in the back-arc basin of the Mid-Okinawa Trough

Ang Li et al.

Summary: This study used various geological methods to reveal the distribution of gas seeps in the back-arc basin of the Mid-Okinawa Trough, showing that these seeps are caused by tectonic stress-driven extensional faults providing permeable conduits. Different types of gas seeps are proposed to be influenced by methane supply, with the control of these seeps being diverse and complex geological features.

Summary: The vertical growth of seep carbonates is governed by bioturbation, with different tiers of burrows being filled by sediment and cements at different stages, indicating fluid communication and carbonate precipitation being influenced by the burrow network during the active development of the limestone pseudobioherm.
