Long-term (7 Ma) strain fluctuations within the Dead Sea transform system from high-resolution U-Pb dating of a calcite vein

John P. Craddock et al.

Summary: Recent studies of the Dead Sea transform indicate that the relative motion between Africa and Arabia shifted to the transform as early as 20 Ma, causing rift formation and fault activity. The Gishron fault, a western bounding fault, has been studied for its fault-related calcite veins, which suggest a continuous supply of meteoric fluid feeding the fault over the past 7 million years.

Timescales of faulting through calcite geochronology: A review

Nick M. W. Roberts et al.

Summary: Calcite is a common mineral that can be dated using radioisotopic systems. The ability to link calcite precipitation to fault movement and fracture opening requires careful microstructural and petrographic documentation. The U-Pb and U-Th methods have important implications for the timescales of faulting and fracture-filling rates.

Pace of passive margin tectonism revealed by U-Pb dating of fracture-filling calcite

William H. Amidon et al.

Summary: A growing body of evidence suggests that Atlantic-style passive margins have experienced uplift and volcanism long after the cessation of rifting, providing valuable geological records. However, the utilization of this archive is currently limited due to difficulties in interpretation.

Far-field brittle deformation record in the eastern Paris Basin (France)

Thomas Blaise et al.

Summary: Jurassic carbonate strata in the eastern Paris Basin exhibit multiple generations of faults, tension gashes, and stylolites. This study focuses on the timing of brittle deformation and calcite cementation, using U-Pb geochronology to date tension gashes filled with calcite. The results suggest continuous deformation from the Eocene to the Oligocene, with the main contractional stage occurring around 48-43 Ma. Additionally, tension gashes oriented at different angles and dated at different times indicate transitions from compression to extension. Clumped isotope thermometry reveals low crystallization temperatures and a meteoric origin of the calcite-precipitating fluids. Overall, this research provides valuable insights into the history of fracturing and deformation in the region.

LA-ICP-MS imaging in the geosciences and its applications to geochronology

David Chew et al.

Summary: Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) mapping is a rapidly growing field in geosciences, providing spatial information on petrogenesis and ore mineral formation. The technique has diverse applications in forensics, archaeology and biological tissues imaging. Instrumentation advancements now allow precise isotopic analysis and multi-element mapping with high spatial resolution.

No more blind dates with calcite: Fluid-flow vs. fault-slip along the Ockov thrust, Prague Basin

Nick M. W. Roberts et al.

Summary: Dating fracture-filling calcite with U-Pb geochronology is a useful technique for determining brittle deformation timing, but results may not always directly relate to fault motion. Petrographic and elemental analyses are crucial for interpreting U-Pb data from slickenfibre calcite, as internal textures can be altered by fluid infiltration, leading to variable U and Pb mobilisation. Specifically, the study of slickenfibres on the Ockov thrust in the Lower Palaezoic Prague Basin demonstrates the preservation of external textures and the destruction of primary textures, with potential uncertainties in the interpreted ages.

Dating folding beyond folding, from layer-parallel shortening to fold tightening, using mesostructures: lessons from the Apennines, Pyrenees, and Rocky Mountains

Olivier Lacombe et al.

Summary: Dating syntectonic sedimentary sequences is an important method to understand the timing, duration, and rate of folding, as well as the sequence of deformation. Absolute dating of mesostructures related to folding can help constrain the duration of fold growth and provide insights into the overall folding event. This study contributes to a better understanding of folding lifetime, processes, and stress evolution in folded domains.
