Experiment and Model of Conductivity Loss of Fracture Due to Fine-Grained Particle Migration and Proppant Embedment

Weidong Zhang et al.

Summary: A comprehensive model that considers fine-grained particle migration and proppant embedment is proposed in this paper to accurately predict the decline in hydraulic fracture conductivity. Through experiments and simulations, it is found that both fine-grained particle migration and proppant embedment have a negative effect on the conductivity of fractures in weakly cemented sandstone and coal-bed methane reservoirs. The formulated model matches well with experimental data and can be widely used in predicting conductivity decline.

The pore-scale mechanisms of surfactant-assisted spontaneous and forced imbibition in water-wet tight oil reservoirs

Bao Cao et al.

Summary: The imbibition of water with surfactants is important for enhanced oil recovery in tight sandstone reservoirs. This study investigated the migration behaviors of water and oil in different-sized pores, as well as the mechanisms of spontaneous and forced imbibition with different surfactants. It was found that surfactants increased oil recovery, especially in mesopores and macropores. However, low-IFT surfactants reduced oil recovery in micropores. Forced imbibition enhanced water imbibition into micropores but prevented oil extraction from mesopores and macropores.

A Novel Method To Assess Stimulation of Sandstone Cores Damaged by Fines Migration

Ahmed Hanafy et al.

Summary: Sandstone stimulation faces challenges due to formation heterogeneity and clay mineral sensitivity to acids. Fine migration complicates well-stimulation and reduces productivity. This study aims to locate, quantify, and describe damage from fine migration in sandstone formations and evaluate the composition of clay content and its effects. CT scanning and NMR measurements were used to visualize and analyze pore structure changes. The technique successfully predicted changes in pore structure and enhanced permeability.

Investigation on gas drainage effect under different borehole layout via 3D monitoring of gas pressure

Li Jia et al.

Summary: Gas drainage using underground boreholes is an essential method for preventing coal mine gas accidents. The study found that an increase in the number of boreholes accelerates the attenuation rate of gas pressure and leads to a faster decrease in gas pressure with a natural logarithmic function. The effective drainage area expands with the advancement of drainage, following a power function relationship with extraction time. Effective stress and matrix shrinkage effect influence permeability, which exhibits periodic variations. Increased number of boreholes results in faster attenuation rate and recovery amplitude of permeability.

Image-based simulation of molecular diffusion on NMR Pulsed-Field Gradient experiments: Feasibility to estimate tortuosity and permeability of porous media

Matheus C. Ribeiro et al.

Summary: This study presents an efficient computational implementation for image-based simulations of NMR diffusion experiment in porous media using random walks. The results indicate that the diffusion experiment has the potential for permeability prediction, with tortuosity and surface-to-volume ratio correlating better with permeability than porosity.

Summary: This study presents a workflow to create porosity and permeability models from CT images at different resolution scales, ultimately determining the upscaled value for the samples. Different modeling approaches can be chosen based on the type of heterogeneities associated with the sample, allowing for simulation of rock characteristics at various scales.

Experimental Investigation on Cyclic Huff-n-Puff with Surfactants Based on Complex Fracture Networks in Water-Wet Oil Reservoirs with Extralow Permeability

Bao Cao et al.

Summary: The study proposed a method of cyclic huff-n-puff with surfactants based on complex fracture networks to achieve higher oil recovery in water-wet extralow-permeability models, addressing the difficulty of injection from one well to others in such reservoirs. However, due to the rapid reduction of oil recovery in each cycle, alternative methods should be considered after several cycles.

Stress sensitivity of formation during multi-cycle gas injection and production in an underground gas storage rebuilt from gas reservoirs

Li Jiqiang et al.

Summary: The stress sensitivity of permeability in UGS reservoirs can significantly affect gas well injectivity and productivity, especially in the first few cycles. As the cycle number increases, the stress sensitivity index of permeability changes with the net stress variations in both the increase and decrease processes.
