Mineralogical and technological properties of the Konya clays, Central Turkey

S. C. Genc et al.

Summary: Konya clay occurrence in central Turkey is composed of quartz, kaolinite, and illite, suitable for dry pressing ceramic process. Samples rich in kaolinite and illite show the best technological behaviors and could be used in various ceramic products such as wall and floor tiles.

Temporal Trends in Agriculturally Relevant Climate Indicators across Nine Agroecosystems of Turkey

S. Irmak et al.

Summary: This study quantified and analyzed long-term climate trends in agriculturally relevant indicators across different agricultural zones in Turkey. Positive trends were observed in temperature, precipitation, and evaporative demand at the growing-season scale, while negative trends were found in diurnal temperature range and wind speed.

被撤回的出版物: Counterions, smectite, and palygorskite increase microstructural stability of saline-sodic soils (Retracted article. See vol. 211, 2021)

F. Javaheri et al.

Summary: Saline-sodic soils are prone to erosion under the dispersive effect of sodium, but rheological measurements can help quantify inter-particle forces. Factors like soil texture, clay minerals, gypsum, and CCE influence microstructural stiffness and stability. High levels of smectite, palygorskite, gypsum, and CCE improve soil conditions, while water content and sodium concentration negatively impact viscoelastic behavior.

Plant Nutrition under Climate Change and Soil Carbon Sequestration

Heba Elbasiouny et al.

Summary: Climate change has a significant impact on plant nutrition, and soil carbon sequestration plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change and enhancing plant nutrient accessibility. Effective management methods and increasing soil carbon inputs over outputs are essential for soil carbon sequestration and plant nutrition.

Salinity and sodicity can cause hysteresis in soil hydraulic conductivity

Taiwo Adeyemo et al.

Summary: Soil salinization and sodification can cause severe damage to soil structure, impacting irrigated agriculture. Understanding the extent to which this degradation is reversible is crucial for sustainable long-term use. This study explores the effects of solute composition on saturated hydraulic conductivity and highlights the importance of managing hysteresis caused by salinity and sodicity for better soil management.

Assessing the hydraulic reduction performance of HYDRUS-1D for application of alkaline irrigation in variably-saturated soils: Validation of pH driven hydraulic reduction scaling factors

Aram Ali et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of alkaline irrigation water on soil properties using long leaching columns in different water qualities. The results showed that increased solution alkalinity led to higher pH, alkalinity, and sodicity in the soil profile, particularly for the soil surface and acidic soils. The HYDRUS-1D model was able to simulate these effects and the associated reduction in hydraulic conductivity, with potential for further improvement by incorporating a non-linear approach for determining pH hydraulic reduction scaling factor.

Changes in pore networks and readily dispersible soil following structure liming of clay soils

Tobias Bolscher et al.

Summary: Research investigated the effects of structure liming on soil macropore networks and amounts of readily dispersible soil particles, finding varying degrees of impact at different field sites. The application of lime tended to decrease soil macroporosity and shift pore size distribution, with significant changes observed at one site and only some indications at the other two sites.

Xiaoyan Wei et al.

Summary: The migration and stability of illite colloids were found to be affected by various aquatic chemistry conditions, with the presence of humic acid playing a significant role in reducing aggregation. This study provides insight into the environmental fate of colloids and associated radionuclides, highlighting the importance of considering factors such as dispersion stability and filtration effects.

Decadal changes in size, salinity, waterbirds, and fish in lakes of the Konya Closed Basin, Turkey, associated with climate change and increasing water abstraction for agriculture

Gultekin Yilmaz et al.

Summary: The Konya Closed Basin in Turkey is experiencing a decline in water levels and increase in salinity in its lakes and wetlands due to factors like climate warming and intensified farming of water-intensive crops. This has led to the endangerment of waterbird species and loss of breeding species, as well as threats to endemic fish species. Models predict further reductions in water levels and potential deterioration or loss of lake ecosystems in the future.
