Soil organic carbon stock assessment in forest ecosystems through pedogenic horizons and fixed depth layers sampling: What's the best one?

Mauro De Feudis et al.

Summary: The choice of sampling method is crucial in soil organic carbon (SOC) surveys. This study compared the effectiveness of sampling by pedogenic horizons (PGH) and fixed depth layers (FDL) in forest soils in the Apennine chain, Italy. The results showed that there were no significant differences in SOC content and carbon stocks between PGH and FDL sampling methods in the 0-30 cm soil depth. However, PGH sampling revealed that carbon was mainly stored in specific horizons in Norway spruce forests. Overall, PGH sampling preserved information about spatial variability within ecosystems.
