Tillage-induced surface soil roughness controls the chemistry and physics of eroded particles at early erosion stage

Tingyu Hou et al.

Summary: This study highlights the importance of tillage practices on soil erosion and organic matter loss, with contour tillage enhancing organic carbon content and reducing decomposition, while controlling the movement of particles; however, parallel tillage orientation can result in higher sediment mobilization.

Effect of rainfall intensity and duration on soil erosion on slopes with different microrelief patterns

Longshan Zhao et al.

Summary: The study examined how rainfall intensity and duration impact the effectiveness of tillage-induced surface microrelief (TSM) in controlling soil erosion. Results showed that both depressions and mounds (DM) and troughs and ridges (TR) of TSM delayed runoff initiation and reduced runoff and sediment benefits (RRB and SRB) decreased with increasing rainfall intensity, duration, and slope. However, DM and TR were effective at controlling soil loss when rainfall intensity was below 90 mm/h and duration was shorter than 60 min. In high-intensity or long-duration rainfall, sediment from DM and TR was higher than that from smooth surfaces (SS), highlighting the need for further assessment of TSM effectiveness in reducing soil erosion under varying climatic conditions.
