Environmental records from coral skeletons: A decade of novel insights and innovation

Diane M. Thompson

Summary: The development of coral paleoclimate records has significantly extended our understanding of tropical climate variability and change. New syntheses have identified coherent patterns of warming and variability unique within the paleo record, while methodological advances have improved the accuracy of climate information archived in coral skeletons. Innovative proxies have expanded the climate and environmental information obtainable from corals, and ongoing efforts to extend established and novel proxies are crucial to capturing invaluable climate data threatened by warming and ocean acidification.

Impact of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) enrichment and skewed N:P stoichiometry on the skeletal formation and microstructure of symbiotic reef corals

M. C. Buckingham et al.

Summary: Coral growth and skeletal microstructure show divergent responses to the nutrient environment, with Acropora behaving differently from other genera. High nitrate/high phosphate treatment leads to the highest growth rates, while high nitrate/low phosphate and low nitrate/low phosphate treatments result in coral bleaching. Changes in skeletal microstructure are associated with reduced linear extension and calcification rates.

The role of pH up-regulation in response to nutrient-enriched, low-pH groundwater discharge

Nancy G. Prouty et al.

Summary: Coral reefs and their ecosystems are under threat from global and local stressors. Research has shown that corals exposed to nutrient-enriched and low pH effluent can regulate the chemistry of their internal calcifying fluids, allowing them to sustain supersaturated conditions and combat multiple stressors from land-based pollution.

Biomineralization: Integrating mechanism and evolutionary history

Pupa U. P. A. Gilbert et al.

Summary: Calcium carbonate biomineralizing organisms have had significant roles in the history of life and the global carbon cycle. By integrating mechanisms of CaCO3 skeleton formation with evolutionary history, omics, and isotopic data, a model for CaCO3 biomineralization applicable to all phyla is proposed, aiding in understanding the environmental sensitivity of marine calcifiers and their resilience in 21st century acidifying oceans.

Mapping coral calcification strategies from in situ boron isotope and trace element measurements of the tropical coral Siderastrea siderea

Summary: Boron isotopic and elemental analysis of coral aragonite can provide important insights into calcification strategies. Laser ablation mass spectrometry allows for a refined view, showing that coral skeleton does not precipitate from a spatially homogeneous fluid, leading to varying sensitivity to environmental stress in different parts of the skeleton.

The Distribution Coefficients of Major and Minor Elements in Coral Skeletons Under Variable Calcium Seawater Concentrations

Summary: This study determined the distribution coefficients of multiple elements in coral skeletons by changing Ca concentrations in seawater. The results showed that these coefficients are constant for a given species, aiding in the reconstruction of past seawater chemistry based on multi-element measurements in fossil corals.
