Global trends in novel stable isotopes in basalts: Theory and observations

Caroline R. Soderman et al.

Summary: The geochemistry of global mantle melts shows lithological and temperature heterogeneities from both upper and lower mantle. Non-traditional stable isotopes are suggested as new tools for understanding mantle heterogeneity. Some stable isotope systems can be used as tracers of mantle temperature and lithological heterogeneity, but are not predicted to be sensitive to mantle potential temperature variations with current analytical precision.

Pressure and concentration effects on intermineral calcium isotope fractionation involving garnet

Yonghui Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of pressure and Ca/Fe concentration on calcium isotopes in garnet were investigated using first-principles calculations. The results show that increasing Ca and Fe concentrations lead to an increase in the average Ca-O bond length and a decrease in the reduced partition function ratio of Ca-44/Ca-40. Pressure also affects the Ca-O bond length and partition function ratio, with an increase in pressure leading to a decrease in the bond length and an increase in the ratio.

Perturbation of the deep-Earth carbon cycle in response to the Cambrian Explosion

Andrea Giuliani et al.

Summary: The carbon cycle of Earth is influenced by the subduction of sedimentary material into the mantle. Changes in the composition of sedimentary subduction flux over Earth's history have had an unclear impact on the mantle carbon cycle. This study shows that the carbon isotopes of kimberlite magmas reflect a fundamental change in their deep-mantle source compositions during the Phanerozoic Eon. The findings suggest that biogeochemical processes on Earth's surface have a significant influence on the deep mantle, establishing a connection between the deep and shallow carbon cycles.

The factors controlling equilibrium inter-mineral Ca isotope fractionation: Insights from first-principles calculations

Zi-Cong Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, equilibrium Ca isotope fractionation factors are calculated using density functional theory, revealing the importance of bond length in predicting isotope fractionation. The effect of the jadeite effect is found to be insignificant, and the heavy isotope enrichment between diopside and anorthite can be reversed at high pressure. The study provides insights into the factors controlling Ca isotope fractionation and suggests that the RPFR of granitic magma may be lower than that of basaltic magma.

Compositional Variations in Primitive Kimberlite Melts and Entrained Mantle Cargo from a Global Survey of Trace Element Compositions in Kimberlite Olivine

Geoffrey H. Howarth et al.

Summary: Olivines are the dominant phase in kimberlites, displaying compositional zoning with xenocrystic cores surrounded by magmatic rims. Previous studies have shown variations in major and minor element compositions of both core and rim in kimberlites globally, which can be attributed to entrainment and assimilation of sub-continental lithospheric mantle material. However, there is limited knowledge of trace element variations in olivine from kimberlites and the effect of mantle assimilation on the trace element composition of kimberlite melts is unclear. To address this, a global survey of olivine trace element compositions, along with major and minor element compositions, was conducted for samples representing the full spectrum of olivine variations in kimberlites. The results indicate that lithospheric mantle assimilation has a major influence on the trace element composition of kimberlite magmas, which has been overlooked in previous studies.

Summary: Lithological and isotopic heterogeneity in the mantle provide valuable insights into the mantle's melting history and crustal recycling processes. Oceanic basalts, specifically OIBs and MORBs, are important tools for studying mantle heterogeneity. In this study, the systematics of stable calcium isotopes in OIBs and MORBs were explored to probe mantle heterogeneity.

Magnesium and Calcium Isotopic Geochemistry of Silica-Undersaturated Alkaline Basalts: Applications for Tracing Recycled Carbon

Yue Qi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of carbonatite metasomatism on the Mg-Ca isotopic composition of alkaline basalts in the Western Qinling orogen in China. The results indicate that the variation in mantle δMg-26 values is controlled by the type and amount of carbonatite involved, while calcium isotope variations largely depend on the δCa-44/40 values of subducted carbonates. However, the use of Mg or Ca isotopes alone may not be sufficient to track the deep carbon cycle.

Calcium isotope fractionation during the partial dissolution of artificial calcite

Mahmoud Alkhatib et al.

Summary: The study investigates the calcium isotope fractionation during the partial dissolution of artificial calcite in different solutions. It is found that in pure water, there is no calcium isotope fractionation during the partial dissolution process, as the dissolved calcium isotope composition is similar to that of calcite. However, in artificial seawater, the calcium isotope composition remains constant during the partial dissolution process due to the similar composition of calcite and seawater, and the small change in [Ca2+] ions caused by dissolution.

Summary: This study reports the calcium isotopic compositions of back-arc lavas collected from the Okinawa Trough. The results show that calcium isotopes in these lavas have relatively stable characteristics and are mainly influenced by mantle partial melting, not affected by lava composition and mantle-crust interaction. The study suggests that thermal structures and tectonic stages have a limited effect on calcium isotopic characteristics.

Ca-Sr isotope and chemical evidence for distinct sources of carbonatite and silicate mantle metasomatism

Hongli Zhu et al.

Summary: Light rare earth element enrichments in mantle peridotites without enrichments in high-field-strength elements are commonly attributed to inputs from carbonate-rich melts known as 'carbonatite' metasomatism. This study compared models of silicate and carbonatite metasomatism in peridotites and found distinct chemical signatures between the two, with carbonatite metasomatism potentially yielding the lowest Ca-isotope values. High Sr content and Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios may serve as indicators of carbonatite metasomatism in mantle rocks.

Light oxygen isotopes in mantle-derived magmas reflect assimilation of sub-continental lithospheric mantle material

Ca isotope systematics of carbonatites: Insights into carbonatite source and evolution

J. Sun et al.

Summary: By studying the Ca isotopic composition of carbonatites and associated rocks, it was found that primary carbonatites and associated silicate rocks have relatively homogeneous Ca isotope compositions, while non-primary carbonatites show variations in Ca isotopes that are correlated with C isotopes. This suggests that Ca isotopes fractionate during late stages of carbonatite evolution, making it a useful tool in studying the evolution of carbonatites. It also implies that carbonatites are sourced from a mantle source without the involvement of recycled carbonates.

Summary: Globally distributed kimberlites show broadly chondritic initial Nd-143-Hf-176 isotopic systematics, suggesting they may originate from a chemically homogenous, relatively primitive mantle source. The study indicates that these kimberlites were possibly derived from long-lived early formed mantle reservoirs. The negative mu W-182 values in some kimberlites could be attributed to various factors such as W transfer, early silicate fractionation, or late-accreted materials.
