Association of Organic Carbon With Reactive Iron Oxides Driven by Soil pH at the Global Scale

Chenglong Ye et al.

Summary: Soil pH is the primary factor controlling the abundance of Fe-associated C globally, mainly by influencing the binding of C with Fe minerals. Fe-associated C shows a significant increase when soil pH decreases from 4.2 to 3.5, while the change is small when pH > 4.2.

Differentiating the Causes of Aged Organic Carbon in Marine Sediments

Mengfan Chu et al.

Summary: To differentiate the causes of aged organic carbon (OC) in sediments, we propose a mathematical index, b(AgedOC), and apply it to terrestrial OC transport and dispersal pathways and other continental margin settings. This method helps us understand the contribution of lateral transport to the aging of OC in marine sediments.

The land-to-ocean loops of the global carbon cycle

Pierre Regnier et al.

Summary: This study assesses the land-to-ocean cycling of carbon through inland waters, estuaries, tidal wetlands and continental shelf waters, and highlights the impact of neglecting these changing carbon fluxes on carbon storage estimates. Key knowledge gaps are identified for future assessments to reduce uncertainties in understanding the global carbon cycle.

Organic Carbon Burial With Reactive Iron Across Global Environments

Jack Longman et al.

Summary: Bonding organic carbon with reactive iron (OC-Fe-R) enhances its preservation in marine and terrestrial deposits. The proportion of OC stored as OC-Fe-R varies globally, with marine sediments containing roughly 20% and Quaternary terrestrial deposits containing roughly 40% of their OC as OC-Fe-R. This study provides a new assessment of global OC-Fe-R burial rates, estimating the marine sink to be between 31 and 70 Mt C yr(-1) and the terrestrial sink to be between 146 and 917 Mt C yr(-1). The primary settings of OC-Fe-R burial are continental shelves and deltaic/estuarine environments in marine settings, and croplands and grasslands on land.

The role and fate of organic carbon during aging of ferrihydrite

Yao Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of organic carbon (OC) binding strength on the aging of ferrihydrite and the fate of associated OC. It is found that OC substantially retards the aging process and that OC with higher binding strength becomes more stable with the solid phase during aging. The results provide insights into the mechanisms behind OC persistence with minerals and its long-term preservation in natural environments.

Tephra Deposition and Bonding With Reactive Oxides Enhances Burial of Organic Carbon in the Bering Sea

Jack Longman et al.

Summary: The deposition of marine tephra enhances the preservation of organic carbon in sediments by bonding organic carbon with reactive metals, primarily accounting for 80% of organic carbon within tephra layers. The distribution of reactive metals from tephra into non-volcanic sediments enhances organic carbon preservation in those sediments, with around 33% of organic carbon bound to reactive phases. The coupling of organic carbon and iron is evident in sediments over 700,000 years old, suggesting a possible explanation for the observed preservation of organic carbon in ancient marine sediments.

Millennial scale persistence of organic carbon bound to iron in Arctic marine sediments

Johan C. Faust et al.

Summary: The burial of organic material in marine sediments is a dominant natural mechanism of long-term carbon sequestration globally, but critical aspects of this carbon sink remain unresolved. By analyzing the chemical composition of sediments and pore waters from four locations in the Barents Sea, it was found that the carbon-iron coupling persists below the uppermost, oxygenated sediment layer over thousands of years.

Effects of river damming and delta erosion on organic carbon burial in the Changjiang Estuary and adjacent East China Sea inner shelf

Bin Zhao et al.

Summary: River damming and the construction of the Three Gorges Dam have significantly impacted the distribution and burial of organic carbon in the coastal areas of the Changjiang River Delta, leading to reductions and redistribution of organic carbon. As global climate change and human activities continue to affect these processes, further research and consideration of these carbon burial hotspots in global carbon models is necessary.

Controls on Organic Carbon Burial in the Eastern China Marginal Seas: A Regional Synthesis

B. Zhao et al.

Summary: The study revealed that there is selective decay of younger, more labile OC from both marine and terrestrial sources in the suspended particulate matter of the Changjiang River, while there is less decay of terrestrial OC along the Yellow River sediment dispersal pathway. The burial efficiency of OC in the mud areas of the Bohai Sea is significantly higher than in the Yellow and East China Seas, due to rapid deposition. The burial flux of biospheric OC in the Eastern China Marginal Seas was estimated to be 7.00 +/- 0.79 Mt yr(-1), with river damming significantly reducing OC burial and impacting the coastal ocean carbon budget.
