Complex Structure in the Nootka Fault Zone Revealed by Double-Difference Tomography and a New Earthquake Catalog

Reid J. Merrill et al.

Summary: An automatic earthquake detection algorithm was used to analyze seismic waveforms recorded between 2000 and 2020 in southwest British Columbia, revealing a double seismic zone within the Nootka Fault zone (NFZ) and indicating a more northerly trajectory and increased plate curvature compared to the typical subduction zones.

Continuous Tremor Activity With Stable Polarization Direction Following the 2014 Large Slow Slip Event in the Hikurangi Subduction Margin Offshore New Zealand

Yuriko Iwasaki et al.

Summary: This study applies S-wave splitting and polarization analysis methods to continuous OBS waveform data and identifies continuous tremor activity occurring at the end of the 2014 slow slip event. The tremors are generated around a bend in the slow slip contours and at the landward edge of a subducted seamount.

Double Differencing by Demeaning: Applications to Hypocenter Location and Wavespeed Tomography

Steven Roecker et al.

Summary: Double differencing is an effective technique for increasing resolution in earthquake locations and elastic wavespeed imaging. However, it can result in larger linearized equation systems to be iteratively solved. The article proposes a method based on demeaning subsets of equations to maintain the advantages of double differencing while improving efficiency and tractability.

Seismic Velocity Heterogeneity of the Hikurangi Subduction Margin, New Zealand: Elevated Pore Pressures in a Region With Repeating Slow Slip Events

Jefferson Yarce et al.

Summary: Researchers investigated the seismic velocity structure of the Hikurangi margin in New Zealand and discovered two high Vp/Vs anomalies, which may be related to high pore fluid pressures from subducted sediments and could trigger slow slip events. The findings suggest that subduction processes in the Hikurangi margin are highly dependent on physical features such as subducted seamounts and fluid-rich sediments.
