Direct production of biodiesel from crude Euphorbia lathyris L. Oil catalyzed by multifunctional mesoporous composite materials

Hu Pan et al.

Summary: Efficient transformation of cheap non-edible oil into biodiesel is achieved by a novel composite material ZP-P[SIH]-2, which combines sulfonic acid functionalized poly(ionic liquid) and zirconium phosphonate. ZP-P[SIH]-2 demonstrates high catalytic activity with multi-purpose functionalities, uniform dispersion of acid and base sites, and excellent hydrophobicity and wettability for reaction substrates. The catalytic reaction exhibits low activation energy, follows a pseudo-first order model, and is endothermic, showcasing its potential for practical applications in biodiesel production.

Gene discovery and virus-induced gene silencing reveal branched pathways to major classes of bioactive diterpenoids in Euphorbia peplus

Tomasz Czechowski et al.

Summary: The majority of macro-and polycyclic Euphorbiaceae diterpenoids are derived from the common C20 precursor casbene, but the biosynthetic pathways for some of these diterpenoids are not yet clear. Using a metabolomics-guided transcriptomic approach, two casbene-derived diterpenoid gene clusters were discovered, with one gene identified as playing a crucial role in converting casbene to lathyrane diterpenoids.

Lars Gabriel et al.

Summary: TSEBRA is a software tool that selects gene predictions from BRAKER1 and BRAKER2 sets based on RNA-seq and homologous protein evidence support. Computational experiments show that TSEBRA achieves higher accuracy compared to running BRAKER1 and BRAKER2 alone, and it performs favorably against EVidenceModeler.

Growing a glue factory: Open questions in laticifer development

Arielle R. Johnson et al.

Summary: Laticifers, containing latex-producing cells, are present in at least 41 flowering plant families and are believed to have evolved convergently at least 12 times. The expansion of laticifers into their distinctive tube shape can occur through two mechanisms - cell fusion and intrusive growth. Hormonal regulation by jasmonic acid and ethylene is crucial for laticifer differentiation and latex biosynthesis. Laticifers are considered to be an emerging system for studying the intersection of cell identity specification and specialized metabolism.

High-quality genome assembly of an important biodiesel plant, Euphorbia lathyris L

Mingcheng Wang et al.

Summary: Caper spurge, an important energy and medicinal crop, was sequenced and assembled at the chromosome level using Oxford Nanopore, Illumina, and Hi-C technologies. The genome assembly was 988.9 Mb in size, with 99.8% grouping into 10 pseudochromosomes, containing repetitive sequences and over 36,000 protein-coding genes. Comparative genomic analysis revealed a close relationship between caper spurge and castor bean, with genome expansion attributed to recent retrotransposon amplification. Gene homology searching identified candidate genes involved in fatty acid and triglyceride biosynthesis. This reference genome will be valuable for genetics, genomics, breeding, and evolutionary studies of caper spurge and related plants.

Comparative Pollination Ecology of Five European Euphorbia Species

Julia Asenbaum et al.

Summary: The study revealed that all species had similar generalist pollination systems, with showy Euphorbia species attracting more insects and inconspicuous ones being largely independent of insect visits for reproduction. The degree of entomophily appears to be positively correlated with showiness and size of attractive and rewarding organs.

Which factors contribute most to genome size variation within angiosperms?

Dandan Wang et al.

Summary: The study found no significant correlation between polyploidization and genome size, while a significant positive correlation was observed between long terminal repeat retrotransposons (LTR) content and genome size. The insertion time of LTRs was significantly negatively correlated with genome size and most LTR bursts occurred within the last 3 million years.
