Properties of phthalocyanine dyads with N2@C60, CO@C60 and H2O@C60 endohedral fullerenes: An insight from density functional calculations

Diana E. Tahuilan-Anguiano et al.

Summary: Density functional theory calculations were used to investigate the bonding strength, geometries, and electronic properties of phthalocyanines (MPcs) with endohedral fullerenes (EFs). Stable complexes were formed between all MPcs and EFs, with binding energies ranging from -31.1 to -14.4 kcal/mol. The bonding pattern depended on the central atom rather than the endohedral species. Charge transfer occurred from MPc to EF, and the distribution of occupied orbitals showed a common pattern for most dyads. The spin distribution and transfer varied for systems with open-shell phthalocyanine complexes and depended on the specific paramagnetic atom.

Understanding the influence of bending on OER activity in metal phthalocyanines: A first-principles study

Zhong-Peng Zhou et al.

Summary: In this paper, the microstructure and electronic properties of metal phthalocyanines (MPc, M = Fe, Co, Ni) supported on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) simulations. The effects of three SWCNTs substrates with different diameters on the catalytic activity were also explored. The results showed that SWCNTs substrate can cause the bending of MPc and the increase of the diameter of the SWCNTs strengthens the adsorption to MPc molecules, which enlarges the N-Metal-N (N-M-N) angles of the MPc structure, leading to improved catalytic activity. The introduction of SWCNTs substrate improves the conductivity of MPc molecules and changes the N-M-N angles of MPc, which in turn optimizes the bonding strength between MPc and oxygen-containing intermediates and improves the catalytic activity. These findings are expected to be employed in more planar molecular complexes catalyzed reactions.

Stimulating photodiode characteristics of hybrid ZnPc-MWCNTs

Rokaya Osama et al.

Summary: This article investigates the structural, optical, and electrical properties of chemically synthesized MWCNTs hybridized with ZnPc molecules, revealing that the hybrid ZnPc-MWCNTs exhibit a shifted optical bandgap towards visible light, enhanced p-n heterojunction photodiode characteristics, and significantly increased current intensity under visible illumination conditions. These findings suggest the promising use of ZnPc-MWCNTs hybrid in various optoelectronic applications working in the visible region of optical spectra.

Summary: We studied the noncovalent interactions between yttrium bisphthalocyanine YPc2 and graphene sheet models with and without topological defects. The results show that YPc2 molecule undergoes significant distortion in all cases, with the direction and degree of distortion depending on the specific model and site of adsorption. The strength of noncovalent interactions varies among different complexes.

Effects of solvent-free amine functionalization of graphene oxide and nanodiamond on bacterial growth

Summary: The study found that pristine GO is toxic to bacteria, while SWNTs show toxicity only against S. aureus. Pristine ND is non-toxic to both bacteria and even exhibits viability amplifier activity at high concentrations. The use of functionalized nanomaterials can change toxicity behavior, neutralizing the antibacterial effect of GO and making functionalized ND more toxic.
