Effects of ammonia addition on soot formation in ethylene laminar diffusion flames. Part 3. The morphology and nanostructure of soot particles

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of NH3 addition on the morphology and nanostructures of soot particles in ethylene co-flow diffusion flames were investigated. The results showed that NH3 addition resulted in changes in flame height and temperature, as well as a decrease in the size and number of soot particles. The investigation of soot nanostructures indicated that NH3 delayed the process of particle inception and surface growth.

Turbulent burning velocity and its related statistics of ammonia-hydrogen-air jet flames at high Karlovitz number: Effect of differential diffusion

Xiao Cai et al.

Summary: The role of differential diffusion in highly turbulent premixed flames was investigated using NH-PLIF diagnostics. The study found that subunity Lewis number flames have a higher global consumption speed than super-unity Lewis number flames at high Karlovitz number, indicating the significant role of differential diffusion in highly turbulent flames. Although the flame surface density and area ratio are similar for flames with different Lewis numbers, the stretch factor of sub-unity Lewis number flames is significantly larger than that of super-unity cases. The enhanced global consumption speed of sub-unity Lewis number flames is suggested to be attributed to the promotion of local burning rates by the combined effect of differential diffusion and turbulent flame stretch.

The decreasing effect of ammonia enrichment on the combustion emission of hydrogen, methane, and propane fuels

Mehmet Salih Cellek

Summary: In this study, non-premixed combustion and NOx emission of H-2, NH3, C3H8, and CH4 fuels were investigated. The results showed that H-2 fuel had a high flame temperature, NH3 fuel had the shortest flame length, and C3H8 fuel had the longest flame shape. The highest level of NOx emissions was observed from NH3 fuel in the combustion chamber, while the lowest NOx emissions were observed from CH4 fuel. NH3 enrichment and excess air combustion could significantly reduce the NOx emissions from H(2) and other fuels during combustion.

Effects of ammonia addition on soot formation in ethylene laminar premixed flames

Can Shao et al.

Summary: This study investigated particle size distributions and chemical compositions of soot in ethylene-oxygen flames with and without ammonia doping. The results showed that ammonia doping inhibits soot formation and decreases the size and volume fraction of soot particles. This was attributed to the generation of C-N species in ethylene-ammonia flames, which prevented carbon from participating in soot precursor formation.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of NH3/H-2/N-2 addition on the morphology and nanostructure of soot in ethylene flames. NH3 addition was found to effectively suppress soot formation with smaller particle size and fewer aggregates, while H-2 addition promoted soot formation. The nanostructure of soot particles sampled from NH3-enriched flames was more disordered, while that from H-2-enriched flames was more ordered.

Effects of NH 3 addition on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and soot formation in C 2 H 4 co-flow diffusion flames

Fei Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chemical effects of ammonia (NH3) on soot volume fraction (SVF) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) distribution, as well as the morphological evolution of soot. The experimental and numerical results show that ammonia delays and suppresses the formation of PAHs, and has a greater reduction influence compared to argon. Ammonia and argon affect the flame temperature at different stages. The distribution of soot is transformed with the addition of ammonia. The numerical study reveals that ammonia provides new pathways for PAHs formation.

A review on ammonia, ammonia-hydrogen and ammonia-methane fuels

Wai Siong Chai et al.

Summary: The combustion of fuels for energy generation is crucial for human activities, but it results in emissions that cause environmental complications and health risks. The replacement of conventional fuels for zero carbon emission is important, with ammonia offering advantages over hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel, but facing challenges such as low burning velocity and high emissions. Therefore, the study of secondary fuels like hydrogen and methane to assist ammonia combustion is essential.
