A review: Centurial progress and development of Wankel rotary engine

Hao Meng et al.

Summary: The Wankel rotary engine, known for its high power density, compact structure, and smooth operation, has been recognized and valued by many countries and regions. However, due to increasingly strict emission regulations, its development has been hindered, causing it to fade from public view and only remain active in limited fields. Fortunately, there are still many scholars and institutions dedicated to advancing the Wankel rotary engine. This work aims to provide a comprehensive review of the engine's century-long progress and development, covering aspects such as fuel selection, sealing, friction, cooling, and combustion chamber design. It also discusses the challenges and opportunities for the further commercialization and development of this engine.

Combined effect of intake angle and chamber structure on flow field and combustion process in a small-scaled rotary engine

Run Zou et al.

Summary: This study uses numerical simulation to investigate the combined effect of intake angle and chamber structure on a small-scaled rotary engine's flow field, flame propagation, combustion characteristics, and pollutants formation. The results show that the intake angle has a significant impact on flame propagation, in-cylinder pressure, and heat release rate in different combustion chambers, but has an opposite trend on the flow field.

Review of the backfire occurrences and control strategies for port hydrogen injection internal combustion engines

Jianbing Gao et al.

Summary: Hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines offer zero carbon emissions and excellent combustion characteristics, but the occurrence of backfire in port hydrogen injection engines can limit engine performance improvement, requiring effective control strategies. Backfire control strategies have specific application conditions to ensure their effectiveness and prevent negative impacts.

Combined effects of intake oxygen enrichment, intake pressure and temperature on combustion behavior and emission characteristics of a small-scaled rotary engine

Run Zou et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of intake oxygen enrichment on early flame growth, combustion behavior, and emission characteristics of small-scaled rotary engines at high altitudes were numerically investigated. The results showed that intake oxygen enrichment promotes flame growth but the effect becomes weaker with increasing altitude. Additionally, intake oxygen enrichment can significantly shorten the duration of early flame growth at high altitudes. Furthermore, increasing oxygen concentration reduces HC and CO emissions, especially at higher altitudes.

Comparison of combustion, emission and abnormal combustion of hydrogen-fueled Wankel rotary engine and reciprocating piston engine

Hao Meng et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the hydrogen-fueled Wankel rotary engine (HWRE), comparing it with hydrogen-fueled reciprocating piston engines (HRPE) and gasoline conditions. The results show that HWRE has a higher power per displacement, but slightly lower brake thermal efficiency and higher NO emissions. Additionally, abnormal combustion characteristics and mechanisms differ between HWRE and HRPE.

Research on the ignition strategy of a methanol/gasoline blends rotary engine using turbulent jet ignition mode

Yonghao Zeng et al.

Summary: The preparation of methanol using renewable energy to produce hydrogen and converting carbon dioxide into methanol fuel can effectively reduce carbon emissions in traditional rotary engines. The use of turbulent jet ignition mode improves combustion rate in rotary engines. This study establishes a simulation model and performance test bench to investigate the ignition and combustion process of a methanol/gasoline blends rotary engine using turbulent jet ignition mode. By analyzing experimental data, the impact of ignition position and timing on the combustion process is explored.

Analyzing characteristics of knock in a hydrogen-fueled Wankel rotary engine

Hao Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the knock characteristics of a hydrogen-fueled Wankel rotary engine (HWRE) and reveals important findings. The study finds that knock intensity, knock duration, and maximum pressure rising rate can be used to characterize the knock of the HWRE. Among these parameters, the maximum pressure rising rate is more advantageous in terms of computational cost and performance. Moreover, knock intensity has a significant impact on the timed sequence of peak knock pressure and peak in-cylinder pressure, and the mechanism of backfire caused by the knock of the HWRE is different from that of hydrogen-fueled reciprocating piston engines.

Implementation of various bowl designs in an HPDI natural gas engine focused on performance and pollutant emissions

Jianhui Bao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different piston bowl designs on the performance and pollutant emissions of pilot spray-ignited natural gas engines. The results show that different chamber shapes slightly affect the combustion initiation and in-cylinder pressure. Increasing the recess depth of combustion chambers reduces NOx formations but sacrifices fuel economy.

Numerical study of the premixed ammonia-hydrogen combustion under engine-relevant conditions

Du Wang et al.

Summary: This study extensively investigated the combustion properties of ammonia/hydrogen/air premixed combustion and found that most properties of ammonia/hydrogen combustion could be comparable to that of hydrocarbon fuels, except for a slightly lower mixture heating value. The NO mole fraction of stoichiometric ammonia/hydrogen could be even lower than that of hydrocarbons. Promising working conditions for ammonia/hydrogen mixtures are phi from 1.0 to 1.05 and alpha from 40% to 60%.
