Understanding adsorption mechanisms of mercury over unburned carbon

Lijun Fang et al.

Summary: In this study, a three-dimensional unburned carbon model was constructed to investigate the adsorption mechanism of mercury. By comparing the adsorption energy, it was found that the three-dimensional model was closer to the experimental value. Additionally, a linear relationship between adsorption energy and minimum electrostatic potential was discovered.

Mechanochemical bromination of unburned carbon in fly ash and its mercury removal mechanism: DFT study

Xinze Geng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the MC bromination mechanism of unburned carbon (UBC) and its mercury removal mechanism using density functional theory (DFT). The results showed that defective structures formed by MC action on UBC surface promote the binding of bromine and enhance mercury adsorption. These findings provide a theoretical basis for further research on mercury removal adsorbents.

A descriptor for the structural stability of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites based on binding mechanism in electronic structure

Xiaoshuo Liu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the binding mechanism between organic cations and anions in organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites using density functional theory (DFT). It is found that the binding strength is mainly determined by Coulomb effect and orbital polarization. A novel linear regression model is proposed to evaluate the binding strength, providing guidance for the design of highly stable organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites.

Single-atom iron on penta-graphene assisted with non-bonding interaction as superior demercurizer: A DFT exploration

Xiaoshuo Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, six different carbon-based magnetic adsorbents were designed and it was found that the FeN3 on single-vacancy defective penta-graphene (Fe/SVN123) showed the highest adsorption ability for Hg-0. The presence of chemical bonding between Hg-0 and the adsorbents was confirmed through electron density difference and density of states analysis, and non-bonding interactions were also found to contribute significantly to the adsorption strength. The temperature was found to inhibit Hg-0 adsorption, and Hg-0 desorbed from Fe/SVN123 at around 520K, allowing for the regeneration of the adsorbent.

DFT simulation-based screening of single transition metals supported on g-C3N4 for the catalytic oxidation of Hg0

Shuai Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption and oxidation of elemental mercury by O2 on a series of buckled g-C3N4 monolayer-supported transition metals using Density Functional Theory method. Results showed that Fe-g-C3N4 exhibited the lowest energy barrier for O2 dissociation, while Pd-g-C3N4 was found to be the most efficient catalyst for the cleavage of Pd-O bonds. Covalent interaction of metal-O bonds was demonstrated by the overlaps between metal d orbitals and O p orbitals.

Nucleophilic Activation of Sulfur Hexafluoride by N-Heterocyclic Carbenes and N-Heterocyclic Olefins: A Computational Study

Shiqing Huang et al.

Summary: The computational study demonstrated that the nucleophilic activation of sulfur hexafluoride by N-heterocyclic olefins is both thermodynamically and kinetically favorable under mild conditions. The activation process leads to the formation of sulfur pentafluoride anion, and the energy barrier is linearly related to the HOMO energy of substrates. This finding suggests that compounds with higher energy in HOMO can be more efficient in activating SF6.
