Evaluation of Thermochemical Energy Storage Performance of Fe-/Mn-Doped, Zr-Stabilized, CaO-Based Composites under Different Thermal Energy Storage Modes

Jian Sun et al.

Summary: This study improves the cyclic thermal energy storage/release performance of CaCO3/CaO materials by conducting binary ion doping of Fe/Mn and Zr-based stabilizer incorporation. The synthetic CaO-based composites doped with binary ions of Fe/Mn show greatly increased spectral absorbance compared to pure CaO due to the generation of black Ca2Fe2O s and Ca4Mn3O10. The Zr-doped CaO-based composites exhibit superior cycling stability, especially under CSP-CO2 mode, due to the generation of inert CaZrO3 with desirable antisintering ability. The CaO-based composite with a molar ratio of Ca:Zr=100:6.7 exhibits a remarkably stable energy release density of 1.02 MJ/kg under CSP-CO2 mode, retaining 88.9% of its initial energy release density after 50 cycles.

One-step fabricated Zr-supported, CaO-based pellets via graphite-moulding method for regenerable CO2 capture

Yun Long et al.

Summary: Calcium looping (CaL) is a promising high-temperature CO2 capture technology, but CaO-based sorbents are prone to sintering and elutriation in fluidized-bed reactors. Zr-supported CaO-based pellets were produced using the graphite-moulding method, and sol-gel synthesis mode showed outstanding CO2 capture performance. The Zr-based stabilizer content within the pellets significantly improved cyclic stability and mechanical strength.

Optimization of sol-gel combustion synthesis of calcium looping CO2 sorbents, Part II: Effects of thermal activation conditions

Tong Luo et al.

Summary: This study is an extension of part I, focusing on the thermal activation process in the synthesis of CaO sorbents using sol-gel combustion. The effects of temperature, duration, and heating rate on the sorbents' performance were investigated. The results showed that high temperature, long duration, and low heating rate accelerated the formation of a stable structure in CaO sorbents, leading to low initial conversion and high cyclic stability. The optimal thermal activation condition was found to be 850 degrees C for 5 minutes without heating rate. The pH value of the precursor solution was identified as the most influential factor among the preparation variables.

Microtubular Fe/Mn-promoted CaO-Ca12Al14O33 bi-functional material for H2 production from sorption enhanced water gas shift

Chunxiao Zhang et al.

Summary: A hollow microtubular Fe/Mn-promoted CaO-Ca12Al14O33 bi-functional material was prepared and exhibited excellent CO2 capture and H-2 production performance in sorption enhanced water gas shift (SEWGS). The stable hollow microtubular structure improved the available adsorption and catalytic sites, while the addition of Mn enhanced CO2 affinity and Fe-Mn interaction increased redox ability. The formed compounds promoted the catalytic activity and CO2 capture capacity.

A review on granulation of CaO-based sorbent for carbon dioxide capture

Xiaoyu Zhang et al.

Summary: Various granulation methods have different effects on the structure and performance of sorbents, such as extrusion and spheronization methods enhancing compressive strength but reducing CO2 uptake, and spheronization and casting methods without external force changing shape to reduce attrition. Finding a balance between mechanical properties and CO2 uptake performance is crucial in synthesizing sorbents.

Reaction performance of CaCO3/CaO thermochemical energy storage with TiO2 dopant and experimental study in a fixed-bed reactor

T. X. Xu et al.

Summary: Doping TiO2 improves the anti-sintering ability and cyclic stability of CaCO3, with an optimal doping ratio of 2.5 mol%, and energy storage density of 1256.68 kJ/kg(sample) at initial and increased by 2.26 times after 30 cycles. Additionally, TiO2 doping reduces the activation energy and initial decarbonation temperature in CO2 atmospheres.

CO2 capture activity of a novel CaO adsorbent stabilized with (ZrO2+Al2O3+CeO2)-based additive under mild and realistic calcium looping conditions

Mohammad Heidari et al.

Summary: The study focused on developing a novel synthetic adsorbent using the sol-gel autocombustion method, incorporating ZrO2, Al2O3, and CeO2 during the development of CaO adsorbent. The research found that the adsorbent with a molar ratio of 20/1 of calcium precursor to promoters showed the best performance, with the highest sorption capacity and CaO conversion rate. Additionally, the cyclic performance of modified adsorbents was found to be directly proportional to their morphological properties, with CN/20 demonstrating the best overall performance in capturing CO2.

Shengbin Bai et al.

Summary: In this study, structurally improved, TiO2-incorporated, CaO-based pellets were successfully prepared by adding cellulose as a pore-forming template and adopting TiO2 incorporation method. These pellets exhibited high conversion rate and energy density in cyclic heat energy storage/release. The evenly distributed CaTiO3 grains provided structural stability and enhanced anti-sintering ability of the pellets, leading to improved cyclic energy storage/release performance.
