Evaluation of burning rate in microgravity based on the fuel regression, flame area, and spread rate

Caiyi Xiong et al.

Summary: This work proposes three methods to quantify the burning rate of condensed fuels in microgravity by measuring the regression rate of the fuel surface, the spread rate of the flame leading edge, and the flame-sheet area. Results show that measuring the flame-sheet area is easier and gives more accurate results.

Downward Flame Spread Rate Over PMMA Rods Under External Radiant Heating

Maria Thomsen et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the impact of external radiant heating on downward flame spread over cylindrical samples of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Experimental results show that the flame spread rate is strongly correlated with the amount of radiant heating provided, and an analysis is presented to explain the relationship between flame spread rate, surface energy, and temperature. These findings can serve as a reference for future microgravity experiments conducted by NASA and provide insights for fire safety in space facilities.

Inhibition of premixed flames of methyl methacrylate by trimethylphosphate

D. A. Knyazkov et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the laminar burning velocity and structure of methyl methacrylate flames with and without trimethylphosphate additives. The study aims to develop a predictive gas-phase chemical kinetic model for flame inhibition of polymethyl methacrylate by phosphorus-containing fire retardants. The experimental and numerical results validate the combustion mechanism and discuss the performance of the kinetic model in predicting the flame inhibition.

Competitive oxidation of methane and C2 hydrocarbons discerned by isotopic labeling and laser absorption spectroscopy of CO isotopologues in shock-heated mixtures

Daniel I. Pineda et al.

Summary: This study experimentally examined the competitive oxidation of methane with C-2 hydrocarbons of different functional groups and its impact on ignition. By using isotopically-labeled fuel mixtures and laser absorption spectroscopy, the researchers generated a novel dataset of multi-isotopologue species time-histories and modified reaction models to incorporate C-13 reactions and species, revealing insights on the influence of each C-2 fuel on methane ignition.

Injector Effects on Hybrid Polymethylmethacrylate Combustion Assessed by Thermochemical Tomography

Isabelle C. Sanders et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the influence of two hybrid rocket injector designs on the downstream combustion zone, utilizing one-dimensional laser absorption tomography to analyze the thermochemical structure of the fuel reaction layer. Significant variations were observed between the two injectors, highlighting the importance of injection fluid dynamics in hybrid rocket combustion performance. Theoretical and computational analyses were provided to explain these differences.
