Experimental study on mercury removal from coal-fired flue gas by sulfur modified biomass coke with mechanochemical method

Shilin Zhao et al.

Summary: Coal-fired power plants are the main anthropogenic source of mercury emissions in the atmosphere. This study focuses on the preparation of mechanochemical sulfur-modified biomass coke and investigates the effects of sulfur addition types and amounts on mercury removal performance. The results show that different sulfur addition types have varying effects on the mercury removal efficiency, with increasing S2Cl2 addition leading to higher removal rates.

Research progress on petroleum coke for mercury removal from coal-fired flue gas

Zhiqiang Sun et al.

Summary: Petroleum coke is a potential substance to replace activated carbon for mercury removal. Pyrolysis and SO2 activation can enhance the mercury removal ability of petroleum coke, especially mechanochemical modification can achieve very high mercury removal efficiency. Further studies are needed to explore the impact of different parameters on the properties of petroleum coke and the mechanisms of modification and mercury removal.

Influence of pyrolysis conditions on the mercury removal characteristics and physicochemical properties of biomass coke

Shilin Zhao et al.

Summary: The effects of pyrolysis conditions on Hg-0 removal of wood chip-based biomass coke were systematically studied, and the results showed that pyrolysis temperature and atmosphere had a significant impact on the removal performance, while heating rate had a minor effect. The BC-N-2+7%O-2-800-10 condition showed the best Hg-0 removal efficiency due to its favorable pore structure and abundant surface oxygen-containing functional group.

Mercury removal from coal-fired flue gas by the mechanochemical S/FeS modified high sulfur petroleum coke

Anjun Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, mechanochemical S/FeS modified high sulfur petroleum coke was prepared and evaluated for its mercury removal performance in simulated flue gas. The results showed that increasing the amount of S or FeS improved the mercury removal efficiency, with an optimal sulfur addition ratio of 4.5 for the highest efficiency of 98.6%. The modification process also affected the pore structure of the raw material and led to different sulfur forms on the surface.

Effects of CO and CO2 on the Removal of Elemental Mercury over Carbonaceous Surfaces

Qixin Zhou et al.

Summary: Coal gasification is a popular method for optimizing coal utilization and reducing environmental pollutant emissions, but the reducing atmosphere is disadvantageous for removing elemental mercury. This study used activated cokes for mercury capture in a reducing atmosphere, and found that high-temperature heating decreases the mercury-removal capability of carbon sorbents.

Effect of flue gas on elemental mercury removal capacity of defective carbonaceous surface: A first-principles study

Ping He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the atomic interaction between elemental mercury and defective carbonaceous surfaces using first-principles calculations. Vacancies were found to increase the activity of neighboring carbon atoms but decrease the mercury removal capacity. Various flue gas molecules were examined, showing different adsorption behaviors for mercury on the defective carbonaceous surface. Among these molecules, CO was found to enhance mercury removal efficiency, while CO2, NO, NO2, and H2O led to an increase in adsorption energies.
