Study on the pyrolysis mechanism of unsaturated fatty acid: A combined density functional theory and experimental study

Ding Jiang et al.

Summary: This study used oleic acid as a model compound to investigate the mechanism of thermal conversion of unsaturated fatty acids to hydrocarbons through TG-FTIR and Py-GC/MS techniques combined with density functional theory. The results showed that methyl, ethyl, and hydrogen radicals are the main active substances under high temperature and fast pyrolysis conditions of unsaturated fatty acids.

Research on the thermochemical conversion utilization of nitrogen-rich microalgae: Two-step catalytic pyrolysis of Nannochloropsis sp over ZSM-5

Liqiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the two-step pyrolysis characteristics of Nannochloropsis sp (NCS) over ZSM-5. The results showed that ZSM-5 increased the weight loss and pyrolysis temperature of NCS. Kinetic analysis revealed that NCS pyrolysis followed a one-dimensional shrinking core model, and ZSM-5 decreased the activation energy. Compared to one-step pyrolysis, two-step pyrolysis improved the selectivity of N-heterocyclic compounds, and catalytic two-step pyrolysis reduced product complexity and increased selectivity of olefins, nitriles, and aromatic hydrocarbons.

Hydrogen-rich syngas production from biomass pyrolysis and catalytic reforming using biochar-based catalysts

Yanjie Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of residual biochar-based catalyst in catalytic reforming process after biomass pyrolysis. The results show that biochar has abundant pore structure and catalytic activity, which is favorable for bio-oil reforming. The addition of Ni to biochar enables it to act as a support, reducing NiO to active Ni and protecting Ni from oxidation. It is found that 10wt% Ni/Char catalyst at 650 degrees C yields the optimal syngas production of 34.321 mmol per 1 g biomass. The addition of water significantly increases syngas production due to the thorough utilization of biological carbon.

Phosphorus doped biochar as a deoxygenation and denitrogenation catalyst for ex-situ upgrading of vapors from microwave-assisted co-pyrolysis of microalgae and waste cooking oil

Liangliang Fan et al.

Summary: In this study, phosphorus-doped biochar was used as a catalyst for the catalytic microwave co-pyrolysis of Chlorella and waste cooking oil. The results showed that phosphorus-doped biochar effectively removed nitrogenous and oxygenated compounds, and achieved the highest selectivity of hydrocarbons and H2 production. Reusing phosphorus-doped biochar resulted in lower production of aromatics and syngas.
