Cyanobacterial bloom associated with a complete turnover of a Daphnia population in a warm-temperate eutrophic lake in Eastern China

Xiaolin Ma et al.

Summary: The study found that cyanobacterial blooms in a warm-temperate ice-free lake in Eastern China had significant impacts on the genetic structure and population dynamics of Daphnia galeata, leading to high turnover rates of clones and frequent sexual reproduction. Additionally, experimental feeding of Daphnia galeata with toxic cyanobacteria resulted in reduced survivorship, consistent with field observations. Further research is needed to explore the ecological responses of zooplankton to cyanobacterial blooms.

Morphological defences and defence-cost trade-offs in Daphnia in response to two co-occurring invertebrate predators

Pelita Octorina et al.

Summary: In peri-Alpine European lakes, the responses of Daphnia to the presence of Bythotrephes longimanus and Leptodora kindtii are predator- and trait-specific. Daphnia developed a helmet only in the presence of Bythotrephes, while both predators induced larger body sizes and longer spines. The development of a helmet exceeded the costs of spina elongation in the presence of Bythotrephes.

Seasonal variation in the response to a toxin-producing cyanobacteria in Daphnia

Alexander Hegg et al.

Summary: This study investigated the seasonal changes and the effects of microcystin-producing cyanobacteria on the reproduction and survival of Daphnia longispina individuals in five eutrophic lakes in southern Sweden. The results showed that the concentration of microcystin was higher during summer and autumn, and individuals collected during these periods or from lakes with high microcystin concentration had a stronger decline in reproductive output. The populations were unable to adapt quickly enough to recover from the negative effects of microcystin, indicating limited effects of seasonal tolerance on the eco-evolutionary dynamics between Daphnia and phytoplankton.

Transcriptomic analysis dissects the regulatory strategy of toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa under differential nitrogen forms

Xiaolong Yang et al.

Summary: The study highlights the physiological and transcriptomic changes of Microcystis aeruginosa supplied with different nitrogen forms (nitrate and ammonium). The results show that ammonium stimulates initial growth better than nitrate, but excess absorbed light energy under high ammonium leads to cellular damage. Adequate nitrate supply promotes efficient photosynthesis and higher biomass yield. The different nitrogen forms also induce different transcriptomic patterns in M. aeruginosa. These findings provide important clues for understanding the effects of nitrogen forms on cyanobacterial outbreaks.

Coping with antagonistic predation risks: Predator-dependent unique responses are dominant in Ceriodaphnia cornuta

Lei Gu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the responses of the freshwater crustacean Ceriodaphnia cornuta to different predation risks and found diverse predator-dependent unique responses. The unique responses to different predators were dominant, but the dilemma of antagonistic responses was relatively limited. However, the unique individual traits in response to invertebrate predation could be significantly impaired by vertebrate predation risk.

Invasive and toxic cyanobacteria regulate allochthonous resource use and community niche width of reservoir zooplankton

Xiaofei Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of an invasive cyanobacterium on the functional traits and resource use of zooplankton. The results showed that the cyanobacterium inhibited the growth and reproduction of zooplankton, but the inhibition effects were alleviated when mixed with other algae. Under natural conditions, a high biomass of the cyanobacterium was associated with an increase in the use of terrestrial organic matter by zooplankton.

Trehalose provisioning in Daphnia resting stages reflects local adaptation to the harshness of diapause conditions

Joana L. Santos et al.

Summary: The study found that trehalose in resting stages plays a protective role, with higher concentrations produced in harsher habitats. Trehalose provides protection under summer dry conditions, while winter freezing does not explain variation in trehalose content. Adaptations to droughts are crucial due to the expected increase in summer dryness of water bodies with ongoing climate change.

Ecological damage of submerged macrophytes by fresh cyanobacteria (FC) and cyanobacterial decomposition solution (CDS)

Weizhen Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that cyanobacteria have deleterious effects on submerged macrophytes, leading to decreased biomass, changes in enzyme activity and chlorophyll content, as well as cell membrane permeability. CDS caused more damage than FC, with Vallisneria natans showing higher comprehensive stress resistance compared to Myriophyllum verticillatum.

Toxic Microcystis aeruginosa alters the resource allocation in Daphnia mitsukuri responding to fish predation cues*

Na Lu et al.

Summary: The study indicates that toxic cyanobacteria have different effects on adaptive predator-induced responses in zooplankton, affecting growth and reproduction under the interaction of high-quality diets and predator cues. Resource allocation to antipredator morphological defense remains unchanged, but somatic growth and reproduction are affected by toxic cyanobacteria in zooplankton.

Induction and reversibility of Ceriodaphnia cornuta horns under varied intensity of predation risk and their defensive effectiveness against Chaoborus larvae

Lei Gu et al.

Summary: Phenotypic plasticity, especially inducible traits, plays a crucial role in the fitness of organisms in fluctuating environments. The study focused on the expression and reversion patterns of inducible horns in Ceriodaphnia cornuta under varying predation risks. Results showed that horn size and expression patterns at different body parts contributed to individual horn induction, leading to adaptive expression and reversion patterns under increasing predation risks. Predation trials demonstrated that adult individuals with horns were more resistant to Chaoborus larvae predation, highlighting the benefit of inducible horns.

Predator-induced allometric changes in the tail spine length of Daphnia: a distinct resource allocation strategy

Lei Gu et al.

Summary: Understanding the resource allocation strategies underlying inducible defense in Daphnia is challenging due to difficulties in measuring defensive trait allocations. This study found species-specific and clone-specific allometric changes in tail spine elongation in response to fish kairomone, with a significant negative interaction between resource allocations for spine elongation and individual growth.

Genomic regions associated with adaptation to predation in Daphnia often include members of expanded gene families

Xiuping Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Daphnia mitsukuri responds to predation risk by regulating multiple gene families associated with chemoreception and vision, allowing for enhanced detection and response to predation risk. The expansion of gene families related to detoxification and cuticle formation also enables Daphnia to efficiently mount a defense against perceived predation risk. These findings contribute to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms behind prey defenses, important for evolutionary adaptations and community dynamics.
