Predatory bacteria as potential biofilm control and eradication agents in the food industry

Biocontrol treatment: Application of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus HD100 against burn wound infection caused by Pseudomonas aeroginosa in mice

Summary: Due to antibiotic resistance in bacteria causing burn wound infections, alternative therapeutics such as Bdellovibrio and like organisms (BALOs) are in high demand. This study used Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus HD100 to treat burn wound infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain PAO1 in a mouse model. The results showed that treating burn wounds with Bdellovibrio accelerated the healing process and decreased the inflammatory phase. Additionally, the expression of various genes related to wound healing was regulated by Bdellovibrio treatment.

Gut interkingdom predator-prey interactions are key determinants of shrimp health

Summary: This study investigated the gut microbiota in shrimps and its relationship with the onset of shrimp white feces syndrome (WFS). The study found significant differences in the communities of interkingdom predators (BALOs and phagotrophs) at the WFS onset stage, but not in the bacterial and protistan counterparts. The dynamics of pathogens were best predicted by BALOs or phagotrophs. Nine phagotrophic taxa were found to accurately diagnose shrimp health status at the WFS onset stage. The study also revealed the interactions among pathogens, BALOs, phagotrophs, and shrimp immune potentials. The findings provide a conceptual model to understand the etiology of shrimp WFS from ecological and molecular perspectives.

Predation of colistin- and carbapenem-resistant bacterial pathogenic populations and their antibiotic resistance genes in simulated microgravity

Summary: As mankind explores the possibility of permanently inhabiting outer space and other planets, finding alternatives to antibiotics for controlling drug-resistant pathogens becomes crucial. This study examines the efficacy of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus HD100 as an alternative to antibiotics. The results show that the activity of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus HD100 is similar or even better in simulated microgravity conditions compared to flask and normal gravity cultures. The study also demonstrates that Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus HD100 is effective in killing carbapenem- and colistin-resistant pathogenic bacterial strains and can hydrolyze resistant genes in these clinical isolates. These findings suggest the potential applicability of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus HD100 as an antibiotic against multidrug-resistant pathogens during spaceflight.

Summary: This study used a mathematical model to estimate the exposure of β-lactam-resistant Escherichia coli (BR-EC) among beef consumers in the United States. The results showed that interventions at the processing and post-processing stages were most effective, while reducing antibiotic use among beef cattle had a limited impact on reducing exposure to BR-EC. Good cooking and hygiene practices at home, as well as advanced safety management practices in beef processing and post-processing, were more powerful approaches for reducing human exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria in beef products.

Reductive evolution and unique predatory mode in the CPR bacterium Vampirococcus lugosii
