The role of single cell protein in cellular agriculture

Antti Nyyssola et al.

Summary: As the human population continues to grow, there is a need for increased food production, but expanding the amount of arable land is limited. Cellular Agriculture is an emerging field in biotechnology that seeks alternatives to traditional agriculture. The use of microbes and microalgae as a source of high protein content, known as single cell protein (SCP), is gaining attention both scientifically and commercially.

Sustainable food industrial waste management through single cell protein production and characterization of protein enriched bread

Muhammad Kashif Iqbal Khan et al.

Summary: Production of single cell protein (SCP) from food waste is a promising approach for waste management. In this study, SCP was produced through submerged fermentation using selected food wastes. Process optimization showed that potato peels had the highest SCP yield at 30°C for 7 days, while citrus and banana peels had the lowest SCP yield. SCP had higher amounts of non-essential amino acids compared to wheat flour. Additionally, SCP-enriched bread with acceptable organoleptic properties was prepared by adding SCP at different concentrations.

Two-stage fermentation enhanced single-cell protein production by Yarrowia lipolytica from food waste

Rui Yang et al.

Summary: The utilization of food waste is important, and this study focused on converting food waste to single-cell protein (SCP) using Yarrowia lipolytica. A two-stage fermentation process significantly increased the protein content of the biomass, and transcriptomic analysis revealed up-regulation of SCP-producing genes.

Sustainable bioremediation approach to treat the sago industry effluents and evaluate the possibility of yielded biomass as a single cell protein (SCP) using cyanide tolerant Streptomyces tritici D5

Wongchai Anupong et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the bioremediation potential of cyanide resistant bacterial species on sago industry effluents and explored the possibility of utilizing the biomass as single cell protein (SCP). The results showed that the identified Streptomyces tritici D5 strains exhibited excellent resistance and degradation abilities towards cyanide. Additionally, the study found that the most effective organic pollutant reduction occurred at temperatures of 35 degrees C and 45 degrees C, with 25 degrees C also showing promising results. The findings suggest that S. tritici D5 can be used for the treatment of sago industry effluents, with the yielded biomass potentially serving as SCP after further analysis.

Pre- and post-production processes increasingly dominate greenhouse gas emissions from agri-food systems

Francesco N. Tubiello et al.

Summary: This study presents the results of emissions from agri-food systems based on the FAOSTAT emissions shares database for the period 1990-2019. The findings reveal that in 2019, agri-food system emissions accounted for 31% of total anthropogenic emissions, with emissions within the farm gate being the largest contributor. The study also highlights the significant increase in emissions from pre- and post-production processes since 1990, emphasizing the importance of addressing emissions from food-related activities beyond agricultural land.
