Evidence of complementarity between targeted and non-targeted analysis based on liquid and gas-phase chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry for screening halogenated persistent organic pollutants in environmental matrices

C. Simonnet-Laprade et al.

Summary: This study explored the complementarity between targeted and non-targeted screening based on liquid and gas-phase chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry for the comprehensive characterization of organohalogen fingerprints in Lake Ontario lake trout samples. The results showed that targeted screening highlighted more halogenated compounds, while non-targeted screening extended the screening to unknown halogenated compounds.

Nontarget Screening of Organohalogen Compounds in the Liver of Wild Birds from Osaka, Japan: Specific Accumulation of Highly Chlorinated POP Homologues in Raptors

Nguyen Minh Tue et al.

Summary: Non-target screening studies have shown the accumulation of unmonitored OHCs in the liver of wild birds from Osaka, Japan, with anthropogenic OHCs highly accumulated in terrestrial predator species and marine HNPs accumulated in piscivorous birds. Further research is needed to understand the environmental levels, behavior in terrestrial food chains, and ecotoxicological impacts of these compounds.

Toxicity of Tetrabromobisphenol A and Its Derivative in the Mouse Liver Following Oral Exposure at Environmentally Relevant Levels

Linlin Yao et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that environmentally relevant levels of TBBPA and TBBPA-BDBPE are toxic to the liver, causing lipid metabolism imbalance and immune cell alterations, even at very low concentrations. Further investigation on the chronic effects induced by TBBPA and its derivatives is warranted.

High throughput extraction strategy for simultaneous analysis of 19 tetrabromobisphenol A and halogenated carbazole analogs in seafood

Hongyan Xu et al.

Summary: An effective extraction and cleanup strategy was developed for simultaneous determination of 19 TBBPA and HCZ congeners in seafood. The method showed acceptable spike-recoveries and precision, with detection limits and quantification limits in range suitable for analysis of seafood samples. The method successfully analyzed seafood samples with concentrations of analytes in the range of nd-5.4 μg g(-1) dw.

Non-targeted screening workflows for gas chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis and identification of biomagnifying contaminants in biota samples

Andriy Rebryk et al.

Summary: The study utilized a non-target screening approach to investigate the accumulation of anthropogenic hazardous substances in the Baltic ecosystem, identifying a wide range of contaminants including legacy chlorinated pollutants and PBDEs. Using new data processing workflows, the researchers calculated biomagnification factors for the identified compounds.
