Utilization of glycosaminoglycans by the human gut microbiota: participating bacteria and their enzymatic machineries

Parkash Singh Rawat et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the GAG utilizers in the human colon, focusing on the polysaccharide utilization loci (PUL) and enzymatic machineries of Bacteroides. It also mentions the recently isolated GAG degraders from gut Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. Deciphering the mechanism of GAG utilization in different phyla will enhance our understanding of their impact on human health.

In vitro fermentation of hyaluronan by human gut microbiota: Changes in microbiota community and potential degradation mechanism

Lin Pan et al.

Summary: Hyaluronan can be readily fermented by human gut microbiota, boosting certain bacterial species and producing significant amounts of short-chain fatty acids. The fermentation products indicate that hyaluronan can be degraded into specific oligosaccharides.

In vitro fermentation and isolation of heparin-degrading bacteria from human gut microbiota

Lin Pan et al.

Summary: The study found individual variations in the degradation ability of heparin, isolated two strains of bacteria capable of degrading heparin, and identified DUA2S-GlcNS6S as the major end product.

Gut microbiota-derived inosine from dietary barley leaf supplementation attenuates colitis through PPARγ signaling activation

Daotong Li et al.

Summary: Our study demonstrates that the gut microbiota-inosine-A(2A)R/PPAR gamma axis is crucial in maintaining intestinal homeostasis and may offer a novel approach for preventing colitis through manipulation of gut microbial purine metabolite. Additionally, dietary supplementation of barley leaf improves intestinal mucosal barrier functions and induces metabolic reprogramming in colonic tissues by enhancing the glycolysis process. Furthermore, the enrichment of microbiota-derived purine metabolite inosine from BL supplementation activates PPAR gamma signaling in human colon epithelial cells.
