Model-based optimization approaches for pressure-driven membrane systems

Zulhaj Rizki et al.

Summary: Membrane technology is widely used in food, bio-and pharmaceutical processes. A unified four-phase model-based optimization framework is proposed to optimize multi-stage membrane systems. The importance of each stage and detailed information for each phase are discussed, including the governing equations from known literature models. The integrated framework can bridge filtration modeling and mathematical optimization for designing multi-unit processes.

High throughput process development for the purification of rapeseed proteins napin and cruciferin by ion exchange chromatography

Monica Moreno-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: This study presents a rational methodology using high throughput experimentation for the separation of major proteins in canola meal, resulting in a very good agreement between theoretical model and experimental results. The study identified column operating parameters that lead to >98% yield and purity for both proteins, paving the way for a conceptual downstream processing proposal.

Design optimization of a 3-stage membrane cascade for oligosaccharides purification using mixed integer non-linear programming

Zulhaj Rizki et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the optimization problem of inhomogeneous membrane cascade systems for purifying fructooligosaccharides (FOS), solving the 3-stage membrane cascade design with a mixed integer, non-linear programming model, and presenting a design guideline and a frontier curve of operation window. The study suggests that optimizing the setup to enhance yield or purity is crucial, with a clearer switch needed for higher permeation in the feed stage when transitioning from high yield to high purity requirements.

New Model to Predict the Concentration-Dependent Viscosity of Monoclonal Antibody Solutions

Rajat Dandekar et al.

Summary: Concentrated monoclonal antibody solutions exhibit high viscosity due to fluid occlusion from trapped solvent molecules within the boundaries formed by aggregated antibodies. A theory based on antibody molecule geometry and aggregate morphology can be used to predict antibody viscosity. Controlling drug viscosity can be achieved at the molecular design stage using insights from the viscosity equation.
