Enhancement Propagation of Protocorms in Orchid (Cymbidium tracyanum L. Castle) by Cold Atmospheric Pressure Air Plasma Jet

Sorapong Pavasupree et al.

Summary: The study investigated the propagation of orchids using an air cold atmospheric pressure plasma jet, showing significant increase in plant size, bud number, and fresh/dry weight, as well as releasing bud dormancy. The effects were attributed to the attack on the cell wall of orchid protocorms by constituent particles of the cold plasma, improving elongation and bud dormancy release.

The Feasibility of Utilizing Cultured Cordyceps militaris Residues in Cosmetics: Biological Activity Assessment of Their Crude Extracts

Punyawatt Pintathong et al.

Summary: Solid-based residues (SBRs) from Cordyceps militaris cultivation were used to prepare crude extracts for potential use in cosmetics, with total bioactive contents and biological capacities significantly influenced by types of SBRs and extraction solvents. The highest antioxidant activity was found in SBR-B extracted with hot water, while SBR-Rb extracted with 50% (v/v) ethanol showed excellent tyrosinase inhibitory activity. Correlations between bioactive contents and biological activities were strong, demonstrating the potential roles of SBR extracts as natural UV absorbers and boosters. Fibroblast cell lines showed safe use and anti-aging properties when tested with the extracts. LC-MS/MS analysis identified various compounds, highlighting the potential of SBRs as multifunctional ingredients in cosmetics and cosmeceuticals.

Cold plasma for insect pest control: Tribolium castaneum mortality and defense mechanisms in response to treatment

Dana Ziuzina et al.

Summary: The insecticidal properties and mechanisms of high-voltage air-based atmospheric cold plasma using a contained dielectric barrier discharge reactor were investigated against Tribolium castaneum. The treatment was effective in achieving high mortality rates for preadult stages within seconds, although longer exposure was needed for adult insects. Cold plasma treatment not only reduced respiration rate and weight of insects, but also impacted oxidative stress markers in adult populations, offering a potential route to integrated pest management while maintaining grain quality retention.
