Validation of Scale-Derived Ages in Wild Juvenile and Adult Steelhead Using Parental-Based Tagging

Leslie Reinhardt et al.

Summary: Accurate age information is critical in fisheries monitoring, and genetic tagging can be used to validate age determination. The development of a circulus count guide aids in identifying age mistakes.

Influence of sample size and number of age classes on characterization of ageing error in paired-age comparisons

Amy M. Schueller et al.

Summary: The diagnosis of ageing error is crucial for understanding age data in fisheries science and management. This study investigated the influence of sample size and number of age classes on ageing error diagnostics through simulation. The results showed that imprecision was less frequently identified at low to moderate levels of random error, while average coefficient of variation (ACV) was artificially increased in the presence of bias. Bias tests performed better using McNemar's and Evans & Hoenig methods compared to Bowker's. This study provides guidance for interpreting ageing error studies and their applications in stock assessment and management.

Puget Sound Chum Salmon Growth Linked to Competitor Abundance, Climate Indices, and Copepod Species Richness

Austin J. Anderson et al.

Summary: The study found that growth of Chum Salmon populations is influenced by environmental factors, competition, and population productivity, with copepod species richness and Pink Salmon and Chum Salmon abundance being strong predictors of first-year growth, while second-year growth is affected by the Aleutian Low-Beaufort Sea Anticyclone and sea surface temperature in the Gulf of Alaska. Third-year growth is closely related to large-scale climate indicators.
