One-year efficacy of rescue photodynamic therapy for patients with typical age-related macular degeneration, polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, and pachychoroid neovasculopathy refractory to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy

Iori Wada et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the one-year outcomes of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as a rescue treatment for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) refractory to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy. The study found that PDT could effectively maintain visual acuity and control retinal fluid for up to 12 months in these patients.

Progression of Pachychoroid Neovasculopathy into Aneurysmal Type 1 Choroidal Neovascularization or Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy

Jakob Siedlecki et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively observed the progression of pachychoroid neovasculopathy (PNV) into pachychoroid aneurysmal type 1 choroidal neovascularization (PAT1)/polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV). It found that younger age at diagnosis and sustained choroidal thickening despite anti-VEGF therapy might be risk factors for PNV progressing into PAT1/PCV.

The spectrum of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy in Caucasians: clinical characteristics and proposal of a classification

Elon H. C. van Dijk et al.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical characteristics and outcome of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) in Caucasian patients, highlighting the association between PCV and different types of choroidal neovascularization in this population. The results showed that most patients with PCV in Caucasians had a thin choroid, and moderate anatomical recovery was observed after treatment for the entire patient group.

One-year comparison of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor and half-dose photodynamic therapies for pachychoroid neovasculopathy

Taiichi Hikichi et al.

Summary: Both anti-VEGF therapy and half-dose PDT showed similar effectiveness in resolving SRF and improving visual acuity in PNV patients over a 1-year period, with no significant differences between the two treatments.

Photodynamic therapy combined with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy for pachychoroid neovasculopathy

Akiko Miki et al.

Summary: This study suggests that a combination of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy can significantly improve visual acuity and reduce choroidal and retinal thickness in patients with pachychoroid neovasculopathy (PNV) in the short term, with effects maintained for up to 12 months.

Two-Thirds Dose Photodynamic Therapy for Pachychoroid Neovasculopathy

Koji Tanaka et al.

Summary: This study found that reduced dose photodynamic therapy (PDT) for Pachychoroid neovasculopathy (PNV) without polyps (2/3PDT) may be effective in improving visual acuity, decreasing central retinal thickness, and reducing foveal choroidal thickness. Additional intravitreal anti-VEGF agent injections were required in a small percentage of patients, while the majority did not need further treatment during the one-year follow-up period.

Long-term outcome of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor treatment for pachychoroid neovasculopathy

Jihyun Yoon et al.

Summary: The study found that there was no significant difference in visual acuity improvement among patients with pachychoroid neovasculopathy (PNV), polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy/aneurysmal type 1 neovascularization (PCV/AT1), and typical neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) after 36 months of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment. However, the PNV group received significantly fewer anti-VEGF injections and had a lower incidence of macular atrophy compared to the typical nAMD group.
