Sustained positive consequences of genetic rescue of fitness and behavioural traits in inbred populations of Drosophila melanogaster

Daniel Bang Jorgensen et al.

Summary: One solution to mitigate the negative genetic effects of population size reductions and fragmentation is the introduction of immigrants from other populations. This study investigated the effects of inbreeding and genetic rescue on egg-to-adult viability and negative geotaxis behavior in Drosophila melanogaster. The majority of inbred lines showed evidence of inbreeding depression for both viability and behavioral performance. However, subsequent outcrossing with immigrants alleviated these negative effects and resulted in inbred lines similar to outbred controls. These findings demonstrate that genetic rescue can improve population fitness and even reverse the negative effects of inbreeding on behavior.

Genomic Adaptations to Salinity Resist Gene Flow in the Evolution of Floridian watersnakes

Rhett M. Rautsaw et al.

Summary: The study reveals high intraspecific gene flow within the Nerodia fasciata-clarkii complex in Florida, but reduced gene flow is observed between inland and coastal lineages. The results demonstrate that ecological differences, particularly those caused by salinity, lead to divergent selection and promote species divergence despite significant gene flow.

Experimental evolution of adaptive divergence under varying degrees of gene flow

Sergio Tusso et al.

Summary: This study using evolve-and-resequence experiments with fission yeast populations subjected to disruptive ecological selection under different levels of migration investigates how gene flow, ancestral variation, and genetic correlations affect the evolution of adaptive divergence. The results show that adaptive divergence is most pronounced in allopatry and sympatry, but significantly reduced in parapatry and local mating. It highlights the complex interactions between gene flow, ancestral variation, and genetic correlations in shaping adaptive trajectories.

Accelerated Evolution of Tissue-Specific Genes Mediates Divergence Amidst Gene Flow in European Green Lizards

Sree Rohit Raj Kolora et al.

Summary: The European green lizards of the Lacerta viridis complex include two closely related species, with recent discovery of a third lineage within the complex. Gene flow has been detected between lineages, impacting the evolutionary history of the complex. Tissue-specific gene evolution and topological differences in phylogenies suggest the involvement of reproductive isolation mechanisms in the diversification of the complex.
