Ultrafast magnetic scattering on ferrimagnets enabled by a bright Yb-based soft x-ray source

G. Fan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates spatiotemporally resolved resonant magnetic scattering of inner-shell 4d electrons in a rare-earth composite ferrimagnetic system using a bright soft x-ray high harmonic generation source, which is relevant for future energy-efficient, high-speed spintronic applications. The results verify the underlying physics of the x-ray generation strategy and indicate potential for next-generation high-performance soft x-ray HHG-based sources in future applications requiring extremely high photon flux.

Ultrafast element- and depth-resolved magnetization dynamics probed by transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect spectroscopy in the soft x-ray range

Martin Hennecke et al.

Summary: We investigated the femtosecond laser-induced spin dynamics in nanostructured magnetic materials using time- and angle-resolved transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect spectroscopy in the soft x-ray range. Through polarization-dependent magnetic scattering simulations, we determined the spatiotemporal and element-specific evolution of spin dynamics and understand the contributions from nonequilibrium electron transport and nanoscale heat diffusion.

Laser induced ultrafast 3d and 4f spin dynamics in CoDy ferrimagnetic alloys as a function of temperature

T. Ferte et al.

Summary: In this study, element- and time-resolved investigation of femtosecond laser induced ultrafast dynamics of Co 3d and Dy 4f spins in a ferrimagnetic Co80Dy20 alloy were reported as a function of temperature. The results show that the characteristic demagnetization time of Co remains nearly constant with increasing temperature, while the characteristic demagnetization time of Dy decreases as temperature rises. Comparing experimental data with literature shows that the demagnetization times of Co and Dy are independent of the alloy composition or the demagnetization amplitude.

Element-Specific Magnetization Damping in Ferrimagnetic DyCo5 Alloys Revealed by Ultrafast X-ray Measurements

Radu Abrudan et al.

Summary: Experimental and theoretical evidence demonstrates the existence of element-specific magnetic damping parameters in the ultrafast magnetization response of a high-anisotropy ferrimagnetic DyCo5 alloy to femtosecond laser excitation. The significantly different demagnetization and remagnetization dynamics of Dy and Co magnetic moments are linked to their element-specific spin-orbit coupling strengths. These findings can be utilized for tuning the speed and magnitude of laser-driven magnetic processes in multicomponent magnetic materials.

Summary: Ultrafast control of thin film nanomagnets using femtosecond laser pulses has potential applications in future ultrafast and energy-efficient photo-spintronics storage=memory devices. Single femtosecond laser pulse magnetization switching without an applied external magnetic field has been observed, leading to a better understanding of the physical mechanism behind all-optical magnetization switching.

All-optical Helicity-Independent Switching State Diagram in Gd-Fe-Co Alloys

Jiaqi Wei et al.

Summary: Experimental results show that longer pulse duration leads to narrower fluence window for switching in Gd-Fe-Co thin films, indicating a linear increase in critical fluence for single-pulse switching with pulse duration. The study also demonstrates that best energy efficiency and longest pulse duration for switching are achieved around the magnetic compensation point.
