From plants to phospholipid vesicles: A comprehensive review on the incorporation of phytochemicals into phospholipid vesicles designed for skin applications with special focus on scalability and in vitro and in vivo efficacy

Mohamad Allaw et al.

Summary: Natural bioactives, particularly those derived from plants, have gained significant popularity as alternatives to synthetic drugs for preventing chronic diseases and treating minor ailments, especially on the skin. In recent years, researchers have explored the incorporation of plant-derived molecules into innovative nanocarriers for enhanced skin application. Among the proposed nanocarriers, phospholipid vesicles have shown to be highly effective due to their ability to interact with the skin and penetrate deeper layers, as well as their biocompatibility. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the utilization of phospholipid vesicles as topical carriers for plant-derived bioactives, including different formulations, preparation techniques, and their in vitro and in vivo performances. The review also proposes interesting opportunities and challenges for the integrated utilization of these natural formulations.

Summary: Oleuropein, a phenolic compound most abundant in olives, has shown antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, and hepatoprotective effects. Recent studies have demonstrated its potential in inhibiting tumor cell proliferation, invasion, and migration, as well as inducing tumor cell apoptosis, making it a promising chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic agent against various cancers. Further research is needed to validate its detailed anticancer effects and underlying mechanisms in future preclinical and clinical studies.

Formulation and In Vitro Efficacy Assessment of Teucrium marum Extract Loading Hyalurosomes Enriched with Tween 80 and Glycerol

Mohammad Firoznezhad et al.

Summary: The extract of Teucrium marum L. was successfully incorporated into glycerohyalurosomes, small vesicles with a highly negative surface charge, for the treatment of skin lesions related to oxidative stress. These vesicles showed good stability and small size, and were able to simultaneously load molecules of different chemical natures. In vitro experiments confirmed that glycerohyalurosomes loaded with the extract had better ability in fighting against hydrogen peroxide-induced damages to fibroblasts, and promoted their proliferation and migration, thus facilitating wound healing.

Enhancing the preservation of liposomes: The role of cryoprotectants, lipid formulations and freezing approaches

Francesca Susa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the formulation design for freeze-drying of two different liposomes and evaluated the role of various cryoprotectants in preserving their structural integrity. The findings showed that disaccharides and polyol successfully protected the liposomes, while the presence of surfactant during freezing process resulted in strong damage to the liposomes. Additionally, the choice of freezing rate depended on the composition of the lipid bilayer.

Addition of Olive Leaf Extract to a Mixture of Algae and Extra Virgin Olive Oils Decreases Fatty Acid Oxidation and Synergically Attenuates Age-Induced Hypertension, Sarcopenia and Insulin Resistance in Rats

Daniel Gonzalez-Hedstrom et al.

Summary: The study found that olive-derived products can stabilize fatty acids and improve lipid profile in older rats, while also reducing serum levels of specific miRNAs. The new nutraceutical treatment effectively prevents age-induced insulin resistance and muscle loss by reducing inflammatory and oxidative stress markers. Overall, the mixture based on EVOO, AO and OLE shows promise in attenuating age-related cardiometabolic and muscular disorders.
