Understanding Rh-catalysed Hydroformylation with Phosphite Ligands through Catalyst Speciation Analysis by Operando FlowNMR Spectroscopy

Alejandro Bara-Estaun et al.

Summary: The effect of three prominent phosphite ligands on catalyst speciation during the hydroformylation of olefins was investigated using multi-nuclear operando FlowNMR spectroscopy. The results showed that phosphite ligands produce more active catalysts, with reduced formation of inactive Rh-0 dimers in the absence of substrate. In addition, the stability of [(alkanox)Rh(acac)] complexes was found to be high, allowing for post-catalytic Rh recovery through the addition of 2,4-pentanediones.

Synthesis of rac-α-aryl propionaldehydes via branched-selective hydroformylation of terminal arylalkenes using water-soluble Rh-PNP catalyst

Peng Gao et al.

Summary: This work presents the preparation and synthetic application of a class of water-soluble PNP ligands. These ligands were incorporated into catalysts and successfully used for the regioselective hydroformylation of arylalkenes, providing efficient access to α-aryl propionaldehydes with high yield and selectivity. The synthetic methodology was further demonstrated through gram-scale synthesis and diverse transformations for non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs.

Rhodium-Catalyzed Chemo-, Regio- and Enantioselective Hydroformylation of Cyclopropyl-Functionalized Trisubstituted Alkenes

Shuailong Li et al.

Summary: This article reports a novel rhodium catalyst that enables highly efficient and selective hydroformylation of cyclopropyl-functionalized trisubstituted alkenes, resulting in valuable chiral cyclopropyl entities. The modified ligand used in this study exhibits superior performance compared to traditional diphosphine ligands in asymmetric catalysis. Gram-scale reactions and subsequent transformations of the products were also demonstrated.

Effect of Ligand Backbone on the Selectivity and Stability of Rhodium Hydroformylation Catalysts Derived from Phospholane-Phosphites

Jose A. Fuentes et al.

Summary: The study explores the impact of ligand backbone structure on the selectivity, rate, and stability of hydroformylation catalysts. By synthesizing a series of phospholane-phosphite ligands, the researchers were able to achieve high iso-butanal selectivity with improved stability even at high temperatures. Characterization of the precatalysts and successful synthesis of ligands with electron-withdrawing groups further enhanced the understanding and application potential of these catalysts.

Highly regioselective homogeneous isomerization-hydroformylation of 2-butene with water- and air-stable phosphoramidite bidentate ligand

Songbai Tang et al.

Summary: The highly selective isomerization-hydroformylation of 2-butene was achieved using a specific ligand and catalyst, resulting in a higher molar ratio of n- to isovaleraldehyde compared to reported systems. The structure and strong pi-acceptor ability of the ligand played a key role in enhancing reaction rate and selectivity, while the catalytic system proved to be stable during multiple recycling runs.

Hydroformylation

Baoxin Zhang et al.

Summary: Hydroformylation is a crucial homogeneously catalyzed reaction in industrial settings for manufacturing bulk and fine chemicals. With mature technologies developed over 80 years, cobalt and rhodium-based processes dominate, but there is also recognition of its potential for producing high-value fine chemicals like perfumes and pharmaceuticals. The review covers the mechanism, metals and ligands used in the catalytic cycle, stability of ligands and catalysts, demonstration of potential using various substrates, and discussion of surrogates for syngas.
