Blueberry anthocyanin intake attenuates the postprandial cardiometabolic effect of an energy-dense food challenge: Results from a double blind, randomized controlled trial in metabolic syndrome participants

Peter J. Curtis et al.

Summary: For the first time, this study demonstrates that the consumption of the equivalent of 1 cup of blueberries attenuates the negative postprandial effects of consuming an energy-dense high-fat/high-sugar meal in an at-risk population. It reduces insulin and glucose levels, lowers cholesterol, and improves HDL-C, fractions of HDL-P, and Apo-A1 levels.

Potential of Beetroot and Blackcurrant Compounds to Improve Metabolic Syndrome Risk Factors

Cameron Haswell et al.

Summary: Metabolic syndrome is a group of metabolic abnormalities that increase the risk of coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes, while reducing quality of life. Compounds found in beetroot and blackcurrants may help improve risk factors for metabolic syndrome and decrease the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind these potential benefits and to validate findings from animal and acute human studies with chronic supplementation trials.
