The quality and the accuracy of codes for terminations of pregnancy for fetal anomalies recorded in hospital databases in three countries in northern Europe

Ester Garne et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the quality and accuracy of codes identifying termination of pregnancy for fetal anomalies (TOPFA) cases in hospital databases. The results showed that hospital databases have limited information or codes to accurately identify specific anomalies in TOPFA cases, but can be used to identify the occurrence of a TOPFA and obtain more detailed information from medical records.

Risk of non-syndromic orofacial clefts by maternal rural-urban residence and race/ethnicity: A population-based case-control study in Washington State 1989-2014

Flavia P. Kapos et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of maternal rural residence and race/ethnicity on orofacial clefts (OFC) risk, finding that infants born to rural mothers and American Indian mothers in Washington State had higher OFC risk both before and after US-mandated folic acid fortification.

Developing algorithms for identifying major structural birth defects using automated electronic health data

Elyse O. Kharbanda et al.

Summary: Updating and validating algorithms for identifying major structural birth defects through ICD-10-CM coding transition, this study found reasonable accuracy in identifying infants with selected BDs in the VSD population. The positive predictive values for the final BD algorithms ranged from 0.76 to 1.0, with an overall BD prevalence of 1.8% among 212,857 births over 2 years from the transition to ICD-10-CM coding.

Linking a European cohort of children born with congenital anomalies to vital statistics and mortality records: A EUROlinkCAT study

M. Loane et al.

Summary: In the EUROlinkCAT study, 18 registries with data on 192,862 children born with congenital anomalies participated, showing that linkage to vital statistics can provide accurate estimates of survival of children with CA in some European countries. However, bias may arise when linkage is not successful, particularly for early neonatal deaths.

EUROlinkCAT protocol for a European population-based data linkage study investigating the survival, morbidity and education of children with congenital anomalies

Joan K. Morris et al.

Summary: The EUROlinkCAT study investigates the health and educational outcomes of children with congenital anomalies in their first 10 years of life, using a European network of registries to link data and perform meta-analyses. The study aims to provide evidence to improve healthcare and reduce health inequalities in Europe.

The accuracy of hospital discharge data in recording major congenital anomalies in Australia

Francisco J. Schneuer et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the accuracy of hospital discharge data in identifying major congenital anomalies in infants. Results showed that hospital discharge data had higher accuracy in diagnosing consistent anomalies such as cardiac, abdominal wall, and gastrointestinal anomalies, but varied accuracy for other anomalies. Application of specific conditions and limitation to surgical procedures improved the utility of using hospital discharge data to ascertain congenital anomalies.
