Diet quality and cardiometabolic health in childhood: the Generation R Study

Noreen Z. Siddiqui et al.

Summary: The study found an association between higher diet quality and better cardiometabolic health in childhood, mainly driven by a lower blood pressure. Further research is needed to explore associations of diet quality in childhood with long-term cardiometabolic health.

Diet quality at age 5-6 and cardiovascular outcomes in preadolescents

Summary: The study suggests that diet quality in childhood at age 5-6 is associated with cardiovascular outcomes after 6 years, with higher diet quality predicting better health outcomes.

Blood Pressure in Childhood and Adolescence

Shakia T. Hardy et al.

Summary: Elevated blood pressure and hypertension are common in children and adolescents and may be on the rise in recent years. Risk factors for hypertension in this population include family history, obesity, physical inactivity, high sodium intake, and poor sleep quality. Lifestyle changes, such as following a specific diet and pharmacologic treatment, have been shown to reduce hypertension and associated target organ damage.

Diet quality trajectories and cardiovascular phenotypes/metabolic syndrome risk by 11-12 years

Jessica A. Kerr et al.

Summary: The study found that adopting a less healthy diet trajectory in childhood is associated with poorer cardiovascular phenotypes and a higher risk of metabolic syndrome. Structural phenotypes were not associated with diet trajectories, suggesting that preventative measures may still be effective until at least late childhood.

Parenting style as a predictor of dietary score change in children from 4 to 14 years of age. Findings from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children

Alissa J. Burnett et al.

Summary: The study found that maternal parenting style is associated with changes in children's dietary quality. Although diet quality declined for all groups, children with authoritative mothers experienced the greatest decline while children with disengaged mothers had the least decline over time. However, it is worth noting that children with authoritative mothers generally had better dietary quality scores compared to children of permissive or disengaged mothers during most of their childhood.
