Emergence of rare carbapenemases (FRI, GES-5, IMI, SFC and SFH-1) in Enterobacterales isolated from surface waters in Japan

Ryota Gomi et al.

Summary: This study characterized the genetic determinants of carbapenem resistance in CPE isolated from environmental waters in Japan, identifying various rare/novel carbapenemases and suggesting that the environment may serve as a potential reservoir for these minor carbapenemases.

Genetic Diversity, Biochemical Properties, and Detection Methods of Minor Carbapenemases in Enterobacterales

Remy A. Bonnin et al.

Summary: Gram-negative bacteria, especially Enterobacterales, play a significant role in global antimicrobial resistance, with resistance potentially affecting all major classes of anti-gram-negative agents and becoming multidrug resistant or even pan-drug resistant. Beta-lactamase-mediated resistance challenges even the most powerful beta-lactams like carbapenems, with dissemination of carbapenemases-encoding genes among Enterobacterales being a major concern. Different classes of carbapenemases, with varying biochemical properties and detection methods, contribute to the genetic diversity of acquired carbapenemases in Enterobacterales.

AMRFinderPlus and the Reference Gene Catalog facilitate examination of the genomic links among antimicrobial resistance, stress response, and virulence

Michael Feldgarden et al.

Summary: With the advancement of technology, in silico approaches to assessing AMR gene content have become possible. NCBI has developed a comprehensive AMR gene database and AMR gene detection tool, expanding the Reference Gene Catalog and releasing AMRFinderPlus to provide a more accurate means of identifying AMR genes and determining their relationship with phenotypes.
