The usefulness of telemedicine devices in patients with severe heart failure with an implanted cardiac resynchronization therapy system during two years of observation

Marcin Wita et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the clinical relevance of non-invasive telemonitoring devices in heart failure (HF) patients. The results showed that the use of telemonitoring devices in HF patients undergoing cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) improved prognosis and contributed to a reduction in HF hospitalization during the two-year observation period. Factors such as the use of telemetry, the presence of coronary heart disease, hypertension, and patient's body mass were found to be related to the occurrence of the composite endpoint.

Effect of remote monitoring on clinical outcomes in European heart failure patients with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator: secondary results of the REMOTE-CIED randomized trial

Cheyenne S. L. Chiu et al.

Summary: Remote patient monitoring (RPM) can be a viable alternative to conventional In-Clinic check-ups for implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) patients. This study found that RPM is non-inferior to In-Clinic visits in terms of clinical outcomes. RPM can reduce unnecessary clinic visits without compromising safety and efficiency.

The First Year of Noninvasive Remote Telemonitoring in Chronic Heart Failure Is not Cost Saving but Improves Quality of Life: The Randomized Controlled CardioBBEAT Trial

Heinz Voeller et al.

Summary: The CardioBBEAT trial compared the cost and effectiveness of a bidirectional remote monitoring system with standard care for HF patients, finding a neutral impact on nonhospitalized days but increased total costs, with no effect on mortality risk. However, the remote monitoring system significantly improved disease-specific quality of life for patients.

Summary: This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of a novel wireless pulmonary artery pressure monitoring system in patients with heart failure. The results showed that the system had excellent safety and equivalence with standard right heart catheterization for mean pulmonary artery pressures, allowing for comprehensive management of heart failure patients.

Device-based remote monitoring strategies for congestion-guided management of patients with heart failure: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Andrea Zito et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate whether device-based remote monitoring strategies guided by congestion markers are more effective than standard therapy for the management of worsening heart failure (HF). The findings showed that a haemodynamic-guided strategy was associated with a reduced risk of all-cause death and HF hospitalizations, while an impedance-guided strategy did not provide significant benefits.

Summary: The nurse-led program shows short-term improvement in mental health status and quality of life in patients with chronic heart failure. However, the long-term effects are still uncertain. Over the course of one year, the program led to improvements in mental health, quality of life, and a decrease in heart failure rehospitalization rates.

Invasive Devices and Sensors for Remote Care of Heart Failure Patients

Sumant P. Radhoe et al.

Summary: Remote monitoring techniques play a crucial role in early detection of deteriorating chronic heart failure, with a focus on measuring intracardiac filling pressures to prevent hospitalizations. Some techniques have proven safety and efficacy in preventing HF-related hospital admissions, and there is potential for invasive sensors to play a larger role in HF care in the future.

Haemodynamic-guided management of heart failure (GUIDE-HF): a randomised controlled trial

JoAnn Lindenfeld et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate whether haemodynamic-guided management of heart failure is applicable to patients with different severity of symptoms (NYHA functional class II-IV). The overall study analysis showed that haemodynamic-guided management did not reduce the mortality rate and heart failure events in heart failure patients. However, a pre-COVID-19 impact analysis suggested a potential benefit of haemodynamic-guided management for heart failure patients, primarily by lowering the heart failure hospitalisation rate.

Remote Monitoring of Heart Failure in Patients with Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators: Current Status and Future Needs

Dominic A. M. J. Theuns et al.

Summary: Management of heart failure remains challenging despite advances in medical and pharmacological treatments. Strategies to reduce hospitalizations and readmission rates are urgently needed. Remote monitoring of high-risk patients, including those with cardiac implantable electronic devices, has shown promise in clinical practice for early identification of worsening heart failure.
