Major gaps in the information provided to patients before implantation of cardioverter defibrillators: a prospective patient European evaluation

Lukasz Januszkiewicz et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the information transmission to patients prior to ICD implantation and its impact on their quality of life. The findings show that although 71.5% of patients felt optimally informed at the time of implantation, many were not provided with information about ICD-related complications, driving restrictions, and end-of-life ICD deactivation. Women were less involved in the decision-making process and reported to be less often optimally informed before ICD implantation compared to men.

360 degrees Virtual reality to improve patient education and reduce anxiety towards atrial fibrillation ablation

Astrid N. L. Hermans et al.

Summary: A study evaluating the effects of a virtual reality preprocedural patient education video on patients planned for atrial fibrillation ablation found that the use of VR video improved information provision, procedure-related knowledge, satisfaction, and reduced worries. The study also found that a disposable cardboard VR viewer for home use was feasible.

European Society of Cardiology quality indicators for the management of patients with ventricular arrhythmias and the prevention of sudden cardiac death Developed in collaboration with the European Heart Rhythm Association of the European Society of Cardiology

Suleman Aktaa et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a set of quality indicators for the management of patients with ventricular arrhythmias and the prevention of sudden cardiac death. The research team followed the ESC methodology and identified 21 quality indicators, covering key domains of patient care. Implementing these indicators will improve patient care and outcomes and contribute to the prevention of sudden cardiac death.

Long-term quality of life and acceptance of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator therapy: results of the European Heart Rhythm Association survey

Lukasz Januszkiewicz et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) on patients' quality of life (QoL). The findings showed that most patients had a positive view and acceptance of ICD therapy, with preserved or improved QoL after device implantation. However, complications such as inappropriate shocks were associated with a significant decrease in QoL and affected patients' expectations of post-implant normal life.

Predictors of primary prevention implantable cardioverter-defibrillator use in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction: impact of the predicted risk of sudden cardiac death and all-cause mortality

Benedikt Schrage et al.

Summary: The use of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators for primary prevention of sudden cardiac death in heart failure patients is limited. This study aimed to investigate the barriers to ICD use in heart failure patients, considering the predicted risk of mortality and SCD. The study found that the predicted risk of SCD, follow-up method, comorbidity burden, and socioeconomic status were independent predictors of ICD use.
