The Role of the Natural Course in Causal Analysis

Jacqueline E. Rudolph et al.

Summary: The average causal effect compares counterfactual outcomes with factual outcomes observed in a sample. This article demonstrates how the natural course can be estimated and used for model validation and effect estimation. The example analyzes the impact of taking aspirin on pregnancy, and shows good agreement between observed and model-based natural courses. The estimated effect suggests that if all participants complied with taking aspirin, there would have been significantly more pregnancies.

Revisiting the g-null Paradox

Sean McGrath et al.

Summary: The noniterative conditional expectation parametric g-formula is an approach to estimating causal effects of sustained treatment strategies from observational data. However, it has a limitation known as the g-null paradox, where model misspecification is guaranteed in certain situations. This study aims to clarify the role of the g-null paradox in causal inference studies by presenting analytic examples and simulation-based illustrations of bias in parametric g-formula estimates under the conditions associated with this paradox. Our results emphasize the importance of avoiding overly parsimonious models when using this method.

Trends and socioeconomic differentials in depression prevalence in China, 2010-2018

Weixiang Luo et al.

Summary: The overall prevalence of depressive symptoms in China has significantly increased from 2010 to 2018, affecting both men and women, rural and urban residents, and non-elderly individuals. The rate of increase in depressive symptoms was more rapid among individuals with higher levels of education and family income, indicating a narrowing disparity in depression inequalities favoring higher socioeconomic groups.

Low-quality employment trajectories and risk of common mental disorders, substance use disorders and suicide attempt: a longitudinal study of the Swedish workforce

Johanna Jonsson et al.

Summary: High-quality longitudinal evidence on the mental health risks associated with low-quality employment trajectories is scarce. This study in Sweden found that low-quality employment trajectories increased the risk of common mental disorders, substance use disorders, and suicide attempts. There may be differential effects on men and women, especially in terms of self-employment. Policies focusing on maintaining high-quality employment characteristics are crucial in reducing these risks.
