Eco-Corona Dictates Mobility of Nanoplastics in Saturated Porous Media: The Critical Role of Preferential Binding of Macromolecules

Meiling Zhu et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics are a growing environmental concern due to their ability to acquire an eco-corona in aquatic environments. The properties of the eco-corona and its impact on nanoplastics transport vary with the surface functionality of nanoplastics and sources of macromolecules. The eco-corona inhibits the deposition of nanoplastics mainly through steric repulsion, and a higher mass of larger-sized macromolecules results in greater transport enhancement.

Evaluation of the binding effect and cytotoxicity assay of 2-Ethyl-5-(4-methylphenyl) pyramido pyrazole ophthalazine trione on calf thymus DNA: spectroscopic, calorimetric, and molecular dynamics approaches

Narges Marjani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interaction between PPF and calf thymus DNA (ct DNA) in the absence or presence of histone H1 using multiple spectroscopic techniques. PPF showed high binding affinity towards ct DNA in binary and ternary systems, with intercalation binding mode suggested by fluorescence quenching data and thermodynamic parameters. MD simulation suggested that PPF as an intercalating agent can distort the DNA structure.

Discovery and quantification of plastic particle pollution in human blood

Heather A. Leslie et al.

Summary: Plastic particles are widespread pollutants in the environment and food chain, and this study successfully developed a method to measure the presence of plastic particles in human blood. The study found four high production volume polymers in blood samples and demonstrated that plastic particles can be taken up by the human bloodstream.

Genotoxic Mechanism of Action of TBBPA, TBBPS and Selected Bromophenols in Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells

Anna Baranska et al.

Summary: Bromophenolic flame retardants (BFRs) are synthetic substances used to reduce flammability in various materials. This study compared the impact of different BFRs on DNA damage in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The results showed that the BFRs induced DNA strand-breaks and oxidative damage, which PBMCs were partially able to repair. The extent of damage varied among the different BFRs, with TBBPA causing the most significant changes. Additionally, the tested compounds did not form adducts with DNA, suggesting that the observed damage was likely caused by indirect DNA-damaging agents.

Exploring the HSA/DNA/lung cancer cells binding behavior of p-Synephrine, a naturally occurring phenyl ethanol amine with anti-adipogenic activity: multi spectroscopic, molecular dynamic and cellular approaches

Reza Taheri et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interaction between p-Synephrine (SN), human serum albumin (HSA), and calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) using various biophysical methods and molecular dynamics simulation techniques. The results show that SN binds to HSA and ctDNA, leading to conformational changes, stability enhancement, and inhibition of lung cancer cell viability through the downregulation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway.

Hamid Maheri et al.

Summary: In this study, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were extracted from jujube seeds and characterized in terms of morphology, thermal stability, and chemical composition. The synthesized CNCs exhibited good dispersion, spherical shape, and negative surface charge. Furthermore, the CNCs demonstrated a potent activation effect on glucokinase.

Summary: Brominated flame retardants are commonly used in plastics, with TBBPA being a widely utilized compound. Due to concerns about its toxicity, TBBPS has been considered as an alternative. Research has shown that both TBBPA and TBBPS can impact the fluidity and protein conformation of the erythrocyte membrane, as well as ATP levels in cells.
