Mechanistic Study for Antimony Adsorption and Precipitation on Hematite Facets

Li Yan et al.

Summary: Heterogeneous reactions at the mineral-water interface play a crucial role in controlling the transport of contaminants. This study investigated the adsorption and precipitation of antimony (Sb) on Fe2O3 facets to understand its partitioning mechanisms. The results revealed that Sb adsorption and precipitation are influenced by Sb concentrations and Fe2O3 facets, with a preference for a change in the surface-binding mode during precipitation. The facet-specific binding configuration on Fe2O3 determines the transformation from adsorption to precipitation, and the {001} facet promotes the formation of Sb2O3 and NaSb(OH)(6) precipitates at lower Sb concentrations compared to other facets. The study provides a molecular understanding of facet effects on Sb adsorption and precipitation on minerals.

Iron Isotopes in Acid Mine Drainage: Extreme and Divergent Fractionation between Solid (Schwertmannite, Jarosite, and Ferric Arsenate) and Aqueous Species

Edward D. Burton et al.

Summary: Examination of stable Fe isotopes is a useful approach to understand Fe cycling in different environments. However, little is known about the isotopic fractionation of Fe in acid mine drainage (AMD). In this study, Fe isotopes in both aqueous and solid phases along an AMD flow-path were analyzed. The results showed that the concentration and isotopic composition of aqueous Fe decreased along the flow-path, which was also observed for aqueous As and SO42-. X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that the attenuation of Fe, As, and SO42- in the later part of the flow-path was due to the precipitation of specific iron minerals. The Fe(III) in these solids exhibited significant variability in isotopic composition, and the isotopic contrast between the solid Fe(III) precipitates and the aqueous Fe decreased along the flow-path. This shift in isotopic contrast reflected the divergence between equilibrium and kinetic fractionation processes.

Impact of Antimony(V) on Iron(II)-Catalyzed Ferrihydrite Transformation Pathways: A Novel Mineral Switch for Feroxyhyte Formation

Kerstin Hockmann et al.

Summary: The study found that at low and medium Sb loadings, Fe(II) induced rapid transformation of ferrihydrite to goethite, with some lepidocrocite forming as an intermediate phase. In contrast, the highest Sb:Fe(III) ratio inhibited lepidocrocite formation, decreased the extent of goethite formation, and instead resulted in substantial formation of feroxyhyte, a rarely reported FeOOH polymorph.

Arsenic-Imposed Effects on Schwertmannite and Jarosite Formation in Acid Mine Drainage and Coupled Impacts on Arsenic Mobility

Edward D. Burton et al.

Summary: This study explores the interactions between As and Fe(III) minerals in acid mine drainage, revealing that arsenic significantly influences the formation and evolution of Fe(III) minerals. Arsenic has a significant impact on the stability and enrichment of Fe(III) minerals, triggering new mineral formation reactions.
